580,000 Tesla vehicles investigated for gambling feature that could distract drivers – Forbes UK

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an investigation into a gaming feature available on certain Tesla models, from the 2017 to 2022 models, that allows drivers to play games on the central touch screen even when the vehicle is in motion. This is the latest safety investigation against the electric car giant.

Main aspects

  • An Office of Defect Investigation (ODI) document posted on the agency’s website indicates that the “Passenger Play” feature “may distract the driver and increase the risk of an accident.”
  • NHTSA has confirmed that the game has been available from Tesla equipped with the “Passenger Play” feature since December 2020, and that the research covers 580,000 Model 3, S, X and Y vehicles.
  • Before that, the agency said that the game was only activated when the car was parked.
  • Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Forbes.

Important figure

3,142 This is the number of people who died in 2019 due to incidents related to distracted driving, according to the NHTSA. According to the investigation document, so far no accidents, injuries or fatalities have been reported in relation to the “Passenger Play” problem.

The context

The preliminary assessment comes after the regulator said it began reviewing the games’ functionality earlier this month and was “discussing functionality with the manufacturer” following a New York Times investigation. According to the investigative document, the ODI received a complaint filed last month by a Tesla owner in Oregon, which read: “Creating a distraction that is dangerous to the driver is reckless negligence.” This is not the first time that Tesla has been criticized for the safety of its models, especially its autopilot function. Last month, the company recalled 12,000 vehicles due to a communication problem in its software that could “cause a false collision warning or an unexpected activation of the emergency brakes,” according to Reuters.
