9 New Movies and Shows to Watch This Weekend: Dune, Insecure, Curb Your Enthusiasm and More

After last week’s streaming attack that dropped Season 3 of You and Halloween Kills, even more new movies and shows are coming to our digital doors.

The hottest new release is Dune, coming to HBO Max thanks to the day-and-date strategy of its corporate brother Warner Bros. Denis Villeneuve may think he should see Dune on the big screen, but those of us who don’t I don’t want to go to the movies right now (for whatever reason). I appreciate the option to stream the movie.

Also on deck is the return of Insecure for its fifth and final season. Issa Rae is ending his drama and we are not ready to say goodbye. Fortunately, we will have 10 weeks to accept it.

Here’s a look at what you can watch this weekend on Netflix, HBO Max, Peacock, and other streaming services.

Dune (HBO Max)

The breadth and breadth of Frank Herbert’s science fiction work has made it very difficult to adapt to the screen. David Lynch tried and had an epic failure with his 1984 film. A 2000 miniseries on the sci-fi channel fared a little better, but it still didn’t take off. Now, Denis Villeneuve tries, with the help of virtually every Hollywood star.

So far, Dune seems like a success. Reviews are mostly positive, praising the gorgeous visuals and oversized action sets. Villeneuve walks the difficult line between being faithful to the original material and not getting bogged down in the exhibition. What it doesn’t do is try to shrink the entire behemoth of 900 pages into a single film. Expect an open ending that leaves room for sequels. (How to watch Dune online)

Dune lasts two hours and 35 minutes and is rated PG-13.

Insecure season 5 (HBO)

Issa Rae’s journey to shine and grow is coming to an end. The final season of her criminally underrated series is back with the season 5 premiere episode, in which Issa and Molly (Yvonne Orji) attend their 10-year reunion at Stanford. The women spent last season separated from each other; this weekend brings them together to remember the origins of their friendship.

The remainder of the final season continues to follow Issa and Molly as they pursue their hopes, dreams, and ambitions, while also battling doubts and uncertainty. Oh, and dealing with the various men in their lives. It seems like Issa has Lawrence (Jay Ellis), Nathan (Kendrick Sampson), and a new guy (played by Queen Sugar’s Kofi Siriboe) hanging around him.

Unsafe season 5 consists of 10 episodes, which will air weekly.

Sunday broadcast on HBO Max

Invasion (Apple TV Plus)

A truly devastating event for Earth shakes our planet in the form of a massive alien invasion. The 10-episode sci-fi drama comes from Simon Kinberg (producer of several X-Men movies) and David Weil (Hunters) and takes a page from War of the Worlds.

The arrival of aliens causes catastrophic power outages, fires, and destruction. The resulting terror and confusion are told from the perspective of a diverse set of characters around the world, including: a Sheriff on the brink of retirement (Sam Neill); a Syrian immigrant mother (Golshifteh Farahan); a soldier (Shamier Anderson); a Japanese aerospace technician (Shioli Kutsuna); and others.

Invasion opens with the first three episodes, then the rest drops weekly.

Locke and Key season 2 (Netflix)

The supernatural adventures of the Locke family and their magical keys continue in the second season (and will continue in a third as well). To sum it up: the show revolves around three brothers who move into the mysterious Keyhouse. There, they discover special keys that open different doors and grant powers. An evil figure named Dodge lusts for keys, particularly the Omega key, which opens a portal to a dimension full of demons.

As Season 2 begins, Tyler (Connor Jessup), Kinsey (Emilia Jones), and Bode (Jackson Robert Scott) believe they have defeated Dodge. But they don’t know that Dodge has the key to identity and is wandering around in the form of Gabe (Griffin Gluck). Not only that, he has teamed up with another demon that lives in Eden (Hallea Jones) to gain control of Keyhouse.

Curb Your Enthusiasm season 11 (HBO)

Yes, Larry David is still doing Curb Your Enthusiasm. Can you believe the series debuted in 2000? Wild, right? Season 11 is set in a post-pandemic world, though the global crisis hasn’t changed Larry at all. He’s as hot-tempered and irritating as ever, maybe more! The premiere episode begins with a bunch of different threads, showrunner Jeff Schaffer joked to EW, that “everyone will come together at the end to make an exquisite blanket of shame.”

As usual, expect great guest stars. New faces include Woody Harrelson, Kaley Cuoco, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, Tracey Ullman, and Bill Hader. Making comeback appearances are Ted Danson, Jon Hamm, and Vince Vaughn.

Season 11 of Curb Your Enthusiasm premieres with one episode and then airs weekly on Sundays.

Queens (ABC)

Eve, Brandy, Naturi Naughton and Nadine Velazquez headline this drama, which is the second show of the year about a once successful ’90s-era girl group that brings the band back together. Also like Peacock’s Girls5eva, they have an idea to reunite after one of their songs is sampled by a young rapper. Their manager Eric Jones (Taylor Sele) wants them to perform with Lil Muffin at the BET awards for a quick payout.

Naturally, it won’t end up being something unique, but the group faces some major obstacles in regaining their old magic. Naomi / Xplicit Lyrics (Brandy) and Valeria / Butter Pecan (Velazquez) have beef, while Jill / Da Thrill (Naughton) refuses to make suggestive material due to their religious beliefs, while also desperately trying to stay in the closet. . And Brianna / Professor Sex (Eve) has not only five children on her hands, but a sick and unfaithful husband.

Queens premiered with one episode and subsequent episodes aired weekly on Tuesdays.

The girl in the forest (peacock)

This supernatural thriller from YA definitely has undertones from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The titular girl, Carrie (Stefanie Scott), is a fugitive from a rural cult who claims to guard an ancient door that leads to a terrifying monster dimension. You know, like Buffy’s mouth of hell.

After her arrival in the small town of West Pine, Carrie makes new friends in Nolan (Misha Osherovich) and Tasha (Sofia Bryant). The trio of teenagers must muster their courage when the townspeople begin to disappear, which Carrie assumes is the work of monsters. The series features a female writing team and the first four episodes come from director Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones). The full season is available and ready for a binge.

Sex, love and goop (Netflix)

Gwyneth Paltrow’s transformation has spanned many roles – from Oscar-winning actress to occasional Marvel cameo to wellness guru and now relationship therapist. The first Netflix series from his Goop empire, Goop Lab, explored things like cryotherapy and the use of psychedelics. One episode focused on female pleasure and that apparently inspired Paltrow to make a second series focused entirely on sex and relationships.

Over the course of six episodes, Paltrow meets couples in a group setting, then sends individual couples with an expert to delve into their particular issues, be it attraction, communication, or repression. Experts offer a number of treatment ideas, such as experimenting with sex toys or discussing past trauma.

The Bachelorette Party Season 18 (ABC)

If it seems like the Bachelor Cinematic Universe has been constantly on the move lately, it’s because this year has brought four different seasons of the franchise almost back-to-back. The delivery of Matt James’s Bachelor yielded to Katie Thurston’s time as Bachelorette, followed by Bachelor in Paradise. Now, we have a second season of The Bachelorette with Michelle Young.

Bachelor Nation members can be forgiven if they feel a bit frazzled. Hopefully, they can get a shot of rose-flavored adrenaline because Michelle is truly the leading man they deserve. She is genuine and beautiful and she really seems to have her things together. Their cast of men might be the most diverse yet (and strong enough that one of them has already been cast as the next bachelor). Also, his season is the first to travel again. After a few weeks at a resort, Michelle and her suitors will head to their home state of Minnosota.

Two-hour episodes of The Bachelorette air weekly on Tuesdays. (How to watch The Bachelorette 2021 online)
