Would it be a push to call A Plague Tale: Innocence an overlooked gem? We do not think so ; what Asobo Studio did on PlayStation 4 deserved much more recognition. The somewhat historical tale of Amicia and her younger brother Hugo can stand up to many greats, and while its stealth-based gameplay may turn out to be stereotypical to some, the 10-hour venture is special when it comes to life. it is taken as a whole. Hopefully, then, this improved PS5 version can be the real game release party.
Under the hood, rock-solid 60fps combined with 1440p (technical analysis reveals it’s not actually 4K) makes for better gaming than the original 2019 launch. Glow is especially noticeable on the faces of the character models and many of the more colorful places, with beautifully lit environments that really stand out in the heat of the French sun. The contrasts are the haunting dark sequences through everything the gigantic horde of rats must have munched on for their breakfast. It’s just as terrible but captivating as The Last of Us.
Where the PS5 version excels more is its use of the DualSense controller, especially when you’re on the run. Holding R2 sends Amicia into a sprint, and the trigger mimics the action by gently applying pressure in turn with her steps. A subtle but effective use that accentuates the chase sequences. Haptic feedback joins the party whenever the slingshot is needed, simulating the movement of rope swings just before the stone she’s holding is dropped on a member of the Inquisition. Without going too far, the game is enhanced with clever uses that we hope future titles will take note of.
The gameplay is unchanged, retaining the linear nature that guides you through a designed campaign full of surprises and exceptional footage. The English Army of 1348 and the underground rodent infantry create environmental puzzles with inventive solutions as combat is almost always a life and death situation. Miss your shot and fate is probably just around the corner. But it’s also one of the most underrated experiences of recent years. A Plague Tale: Innocence has always been a great game. The PS5 improves it a bit.
