A heavy truck transporting wheat between Spain and the Netherlands was detained on the A63 highway, in the south-north direction, on the border between the Landes and the Gironde, during a banal check.
After “clearly marking” the dog on the “left rear of the trailer,” Bordeaux customs officers found the drugs hidden “in side compartments specially equipped for a load of wheat covering the entire trailer.”
Cost 19 million euros
In total, 2.41 tons of cannabis resin and 9.75 kg of herbal cannabis were intercepted, worth “more than 19 million euros on the illegal market,” the statement said.
At the end of police custody, the two drivers, two Spaniards aged 42 and 29, according to Sud Ouest, were handed over and then presented to an investigating judge at JIRS (Specialized Interregional Jurisdiction) Bordeaux on Thursday.
They were charged with the importation, trafficking and laundering of drugs as part of an organized group and participation in a criminal community. They were taken into custody.
“Exceptional Seizure”
The rest of the investigation was entrusted to the Bordeaux branch of the Anti-Narcotics Directorate (Ofast) of the Judicial Police, says Sud Ouest.
“Once again, Customs demonstrates an exceptional confiscation of cannabis, reminiscent of its key role in the fight against drug trafficking,” salute also Economy and Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire and Gabriel Attal, Minister Delegate in charge of public accounts.
