Acquisition of Activision by Microsoft: what games could be found in the Game Pass?

Microsoft just did the deal of the century by buying one of the biggest video game heavyweights: Activision Blizzard. For the neat sum of 60,000 million euros, the American publisher and owner of emblematic licenses such as Call Of Duty or World of Warcraft has joined the ranks of the Redmond firm. A question then arises: what games could be added to the Xbox Game Pass catalog?

Quite simply, it’s the biggest acquisition in video game history. As you know, Microsoft has just announced the acquisition for the colossal sum of 60,000 million euros of a heavyweight in the video game industry: Activision-Blizzard. To give you an idea, this operation is almost equivalent to the amount that Disney put on the table to merge with 21st Century Fox.

After acquiring Zenimax Media, the parent company of Bethesda, in September 2020, Microsoft further strengthens its power in the world of games with the addition of 14 studios, if not more, under its banner. In fact, teams from Activision Publishing, Blizzard Entertainment, Beenox, Demonware, Digital Legends, High Moon Studios, Infinity Ward, King, Major League Gaming, Radical Entertainment, Raven Software, Sledgehammer Games, Toys for Bob, and Treyarch will be joining the ranks of the Redmond firm.

And by extension, the Xbox Game Pass catalog will necessarily benefit from this takeover bid, as announced by Phil Spencer, now head of Microsoft’s Gaming division. “From the lockdown, we will offer as many Activision-Blizzard games as possible on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass, whether they are new titles or games from the incredible Activision-Blizzard catalog. […] As always, we look forward to continuing to add more value and more great games to Xbox Game Pass.”

List of licenses that can reach Xbox Game Pass

So what are the potential licenses now owned by Microsoft that could land on Xbox Game Pass, either in the form of existing works or new games? Let’s list these licenses together:

  • Blur
  • Cease
  • Obligations
  • candy crush
  • crash bandicoot
  • Devil
  • dj hero
  • land empire
  • gabriel knight
  • geometry wars
  • Guitar Hero
  • Gun
  • Heart of stone
  • heroes of the storm
  • witches
  • Interstate ’76
  • quest for the king
  • laura bow mysteries
  • the lost vikings
  • Supervision
  • Phantasmagoria
  • Trap
  • police search
  • Prototype
  • quest for glory
  • Singularity
  • skylanders
  • soldier of fortune
  • spatial search
  • Spyro the dragon
  • Star boat
  • Tenchu
  • Time change
  • Tony Hawk Pro Skater
  • true crime
  • world of warcraft
  • zork

With this takeover bid, Microsoft is at the head of 30 leading studios, if we count the previous entities that joined the group with the acquisition of Zenimax Media. The American giant is also offering itself additional capabilities in terms of publishing and production in e-sports, as well as a significant presence in the mobile gaming market with King, publisher of successful titles such as Candy Crush. On this subject, in addition, we could very well see Microsoft launch an exclusively mobile version of Game Pass that would allow access to the entire King catalog. The future will tell.
