In 2013, former thatgamecompany members behind Flow, Flower and Journey (then Sky: Children of the Light after several members left) founded Giant Squid and soon announced the underwater adventure game Abzû, originally released in 2016 on PC. PlayStation 4 and two years later on Nintendo Switch. Giant Squid didn’t stop there as in 2020 the American company released the second game for PS4, PS5, PC, Mac and iOS: The Pathless, an adventure game. Abzû was published by 505 Games, but this time Giant Squid was supported by Annapurna Interactive for publication. The game was well received when it was released and we have good news: it will be coming to Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series this winter (Q4 of this year). The PS5 version received a physical release shortly after the download release via iam8bit, Skybound Games, and Just For Games, so we believe this will be the case for the Switch version at least.
Like Abzû, The Pathless was directed by Matt Nava, who aimed to create a game about finding your own path, and the music was composed by Austin Wintory (also known for his work on music from Flow, Journey and the entire The Banner Saga series). , Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Pode, John Wick HEX, Erica, AGOS: A Game of Space and many other video games and movies). In addition, the soundtrack has received several awards. For this game, Austin Wintory invited the Alash Ensemble, a traditional Tuvan musical group.
The Pathless tells about the mystical adventure of the archer Huntress, accompanied by an eagle, in an endless forest. The game emphasizes exploration and takes place in an open world with no map to guide us, so we make our own path through ancient lands filled with secrets. The Huntress seeks to remove the curse that threatens both the mystical island where she resides and the whole world, and finally meet the game’s great antagonist. The heroine is a master archer and has the ability to perform fluid acrobatic tricks and very powerful shots. She can also use her spiritual vision to reveal the secrets of the past, which by the way affects the gameplay as it helps to find places of interest and connects with an accompanying eagle that can carry her so she can fly through the air.
Pathless is equipped with a unique archery system that allows for effortless shooting while traversing landscapes at full speed. The title also consists of solving puzzles in various locations to explore, including ancient ruins that allow you to unravel the mysteries of forgotten traditions. In addition to what an action-adventure game requires, it will also meet opponents: giant evil spirits roaming the forest. Target ? Track down the enemies, but make sure we don’t fall prey to them. However, do not worry if the Huntress is defeated, even if the glowing stones collected during the adventure are lost, they can be restored as much as possible before they disappear, and the game does not punish us with permanent damage or death.
