Version 22H2 will be rolled out in stages, just like previous Windows updates. First, users who want to install it manually will be able to download it from Windows Update. Then the machines that have the fewest compatibility issues will get the update. Finally, it will be deployed on a larger scale.

To better understand, here’s a rundown of everything you need to know about 22H2 and the next Windows updates.

What is the build number of Windows 11 22H2?

The RTM build number is 22621. Specifically, based on feedback from users who manually downloaded the update, the build number is 22621.521.

Who can download Windows 11 22H2?

Update 22H2 is free and available to all Windows 11 users, as well as Windows 10 users whose device meets the minimum requirements for installing Windows 11.

When will Windows 11 22H2 be available through Windows Update, Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), Volume License Services and MSDN?

Microsoft hasn’t given a specific date, but if this rollout goes as well as the previous ones, the update should be available soon. By the time you’re reading this article, it might already be there.

Where is Windows 10 22H2 and what will be in it?

If Windows 10 remains the majority, Microsoft has very little to say about Windows 10 22H2. The Windows 10 Annual Feature Update is due out in October, but Microsoft still declines to comment on what it will contain. However, we do know that it will come as an activation package, which means it will be a minor update for those running the latest versions of Windows. updates until October 14, 2025. Until then, you can continue to use Windows 10 safely.

What has changed in the system requirements for Windows 11 since the 22H2 update?

Very few things. In particular, in terms of CPU/TPU, the requirements are always the same. However, something new to know: Microsoft now requires Windows 11 Home and Professional users to be connected to the internet and have a Microsoft account in order to install the 22H2 update.

No matter what, you can always install Windows 11 differently on devices that don’t have CPU/TPU compatibility. Microsoft still does not interfere with this, these devices are not officially “supported”.

Will Windows 11 22H2 be available through an activation package?

Surprisingly, even in the new version there will be few new features. Unlike the activation package logic used for the latest Windows 10 feature updates, which allows you to quickly install an easy update, version 22H2 will require a full installation.

Microsoft declined to provide reasons for this choice. According to my contacts, this could be due to changes to the taskbar, or Microsoft’s desire to be able to update Windows 11 at any time other than the annual feature update.

Microsoft is making efforts to reduce the size of downloads and the time it takes to install annual and monthly updates. However, version 22H2 may take up to 90 minutes to download and install, and another 20 minutes to complete the installation.

What’s in Windows 11 22H2?

Windows 11 22H2 brings new security features as well as new productivity features for business users. It includes new Snap layouts, new Focus features, improved voice control, and updates to the new Windows Store.

In addition, the Amazon Appstore Preview, which makes Android apps available for Windows 11, is rolling out to more countries and now includes 20,000 Android apps and games.

What about a tabbed explorer?

Tabbed Explorer was supposed to ship with Windows 11 22H2. But apparently it wasn’t finalized in time to be part of the update.

Microsoft has specified that this new feature will be available later in a separate update – first in October for non-security preview updates, and then in November as part of Patch Tuesday.

What other features can we expect in October/November?

In addition to the tabbed File Explorer, Windows 11 22H2 users will receive separate updates to the Photos app; suggested actions for copying phone numbers, future dates, etc. ; taskbar overflow function; and share them with other devices through the “Sharing with the environment” function.

In February, Microsoft announced that it plans to make features available beyond the annual Windows Feature Update through security updates and the Microsoft Store. The company called these updates “continuous innovation.”

What if I don’t want to automatically receive these optional updates?

If your device is running Windows 11 Enterprise or Education and managed by your organization, you can control when you get these updates. They will indeed be disabled by default for Enterprise and Education users.

This will allow administrators to create a group/mobile device management policy that allows users to enable features as a whole (rather than individually). Microsoft plans to publish more information about these features and announce their release dates in advance.

Please note, however, that the update scheduled for November will be considered part of 22H2 and therefore will not include this service. Therefore, the November Update feature set will not be disabled by default for Enterprise and Education customers. The above policy will apply from the next update.

What will happen after Windows 11 22H2?

Microsoft plans to continue this plan: an annual feature update for Windows 11 that comes out in the fall or thereafter, followed by interim updates throughout the year that roll out as they become available.

Should we wait for Windows 12 in 2024?

During the press briefing, Microsoft wanted to clarify its desire to keep updating Windows 11 every year, but at this point, it doesn’t want to publish a major update in three years. On this occasion, Aaron Woodman, VP of marketing for Windows, told us that he “didn’t hear anyone inside talking about a three-year cadence.” “We intend to continue rolling out annual updates to Windows 11,” he insists.

For my part, I think that the three-year frequency of major updates – the next scheduled for 2024 – first mentioned by Windows Central, may very well become a reality. But this plan is not set in stone. As for whether there will be a major update called “Windows 12” in 2024, I guess it’s just a matter of marketing… and it will mostly depend on what Apple does at that time.
