It looks like Amazon is rethinking its retail ambitions after years of active expansion. The company says it is closing all 68 of its physical bookstores, pop-ups and 4-star stores in both the US and UK. The company said in a statement to The New York Times that in-person retail is still important to it and that it will focus on its Just Walk Out cashless technology, its grocery stores and a recently announced clothing store in Los Angeles. So the company will still be busy.
Closing times will vary by store. Workers in these locations can get jobs at nearby Amazon stores.
The first physical bookstore opened in November 2015 and the first 4-star store opened in September 2018. Both were experiments in merging Amazon’s online shopping data with the retail world. The choice in the store reflected what was popular or could be sold. We’re not sure how well this worked for the company.
Despite the news, the company is still opening more Go checkout stores, with third parties like Starbucks and Sainsbury’s testing Just Walk Out technology. There are also many Whole Foods stores, and in 2020, the first Amazon Fresh grocery store was opened. It will be interesting to see what happens.
