After traveling to the UAE to work on something ‘new’, the retired game designer had only been in Dubai for a day before falling ill with pancreatitis.

The 51-year-old, who had previously worked on Xbox and Playstation games, needed a urine test – this is where the marijuana was detected. reported that Clark was in Dubai to locate recording studio locations.

Dubai law requires that any illegal substances found in testing be reported to the police – despite Clark claiming to have smoked marijuana in Las Vegas, where it is legal.

He was arrested and jailed for three days before being released and forced to stay in his hotel pending a decision from the prosecution.

He told Mail Online: “I was absolutely amazed to learn that I was charged due to the residual marijuana in my system. I smoked it legally in America long before I even got on the plane.

“I was aware of Dubai’s strict drug laws, but never for a moment thought that something I had done legally in my own country would lead to my arrest. “

While incarcerated, the vein where the IV line was inserted became infected and prison staff did not give him the antibiotics that had been prescribed for him, Clark said.

He is now on a “no-fly list” and must stay in Dubai until prosecutors rule.

Clark said the trip had become a “nightmare” and that he had no idea going to the hospital would result in potential jail time.

Detained in Dubai, a group that helps tourists who break strict UAE rules have taken on his case.

Founder Radha Sterling said: “The UAE’s arbitrary application of laws and the lack of predictable legal results mean Peter faces years in prison for legally smoking marijuana.

“Even if he is found innocent, he can be dragged through slow and costly legal proceedings.

“Corrupt police informants were used by the prosecution to shift possession charges to drug trafficking charges. “

She added, “The US State Department must ensure that its citizens who visit the UAE are free from legal abuse. “
