Scientists at Stanford University have just published a new paper as part of the HAI project. This last experiment starts from the assumption that the incarnation would be important for the evolution of intelligence. The goal of the study, still ongoing, is to determine how scientists should use incarnation to design smarter AIs.
The results of these simulations pave the way for new horizons in the current era. It is conceivable to further optimize the learning and adaptability of artificial intelligences to better serve the collective needs of humanity.
A problem to explore to improve AI design
Research on the interactions between the human and animal body and spirit has been conducted for many years. In fact, it has been shown time and again that this interdependence was central to the evolution of man and animals.
Learning and coping skills are influenced by the brain in the body and vice versa. We learn many of our abilities from the interaction of our body with the environment around us. In short, all parts of the body of embodied beings are designed to perform specific tasks.
Although Artificial Intelligence has exceptional intellectual capabilities, it is a disembodied entity. Their learning takes place independently of any physical form.
The team of scientists working on the HAI project at Stanford University wonders about the issue. A simulation is carried out to determine if the evolution of an AI’s intelligence would be optimized through the use of incarnation.
An extension of old simulations
To verify their hypothesis, the scientists set up a simulated environment similar to that in ancient experiments. This first phase of the experiment is not innovative. It is about creating a virtual space and depositing simulated creatures from connected geometric shapes there.
The ten most moving shapes are taken as the basis for creating a multitude of variations. The operation is repeated until you get a handful of creatures that seem to move easily on the virtual surface. During the experiment, the shapes, called “unimales”, evolve in different environments. Some traverse flat terrain while others settle on terrain dotted with hills, steps, and ridges.
The second phase of the experience, the Gladiator Challenge, consists of selecting the 10 best unimals. They compete in 8 new and more complex tasks. The result is clear: creatures that have evolved in different terrains fulfilled their tasks faster. Those who come from flat terrain have had a harder time adjusting.
This validates the hypothesis that developing the body with the mind that controls it is more beneficial than settling for an incorporeal entity. The findings of this study are revolutionary for future AI designs.
