Android Go launches with Android 12

Although Google has more than 200 million users on Android Go, the American giant has just launched a new version of its mobile operating system aimed at entry-level smartphones. This version of Go is based on the recent version of Android 12 and promises to launch applications 30% faster, with smoother animations. Go edition users should no longer see a blank screen while waiting for an application to launch.

Other key improvements in Android 12 Go Edition include longer battery life, new smart features, easier application and device sharing, and improved privacy controls.

This version of Go also promises to save battery and storage by automatically hibernating apps that haven’t been used for long periods of time. Which helps to run low-end Android devices with limited storage. Also, Files Go app can recover files in 30 days, in case files are accidentally deleted, freeing up space. Last August, this application had 150 million users.

New smart features

The new features of Google’s smart operating system are related to the recent applications screen, where it is now possible to view news and translate content into another language. Users will also be able to save on data usage by sharing applications directly with nearby devices through Near Share and Google Play.

For those who share a device with their family and friends, the Android 12GB edition gets a new guest user experience with user profiles displayed directly on the lock screen. Android 12 has many privacy controls, such as the ability to share an approximate location in an application.

Finally, this new version has a new privacy panel. The latter offers a summary of the accesses of the different applications to sensitive data, in particular to the microphone. Users can also revoke permissions from the dashboard, and a new privacy indicator in the status bar shows when apps are accessing the device’s microphone or camera.

As a reminder, Android Go exists since Android Oreo, as of December 2017. It allows a lighter version of Android for entry-level devices with 2GB or less of RAM. While its 200 million user base is small compared to the three billion Android users worldwide, it is a significant number that Google doesn’t want to take shortcuts to.
