Android: Samsung launches its OneUI 4 update

Samsung has just announced the launch of its OneUI 4 overlay, which includes Android 12. It will first be available on the Korean manufacturer’s Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21 Plus and Galaxy S21 Ultra smartphones, before being released on older smartphones. While its competitor Google wanted to be radical in its approach to Android 12, through its own Material You overlay, so much so to say that OneUI 4 was highly anticipated after its open beta program, which had “tens of thousands” of participants. , according to Samsung.

Still, the differences between OneUI 3 and OneUI 4 won’t be immediately obvious. It’s only when you start paying more attention to the little details, like the new rounded corners of the widgets that you start to notice changes.

Samsung has deliberately taken a more subtle approach than Google to align with the Galaxy devices and Samsung’s approach to OneUI. Understandably, Samsung has had to consider its current user interface, as well as the fact that the Galaxy Store has countless themes that Galaxy users can download for free or purchase and install on their phones. The Galaxy and Material You themes sometimes disagree, and Samsung wanted to respect users’ choices.

Eye for details

If it is not the moment of the revolution, everything is in the details. When launching OneUI 4, you will notice small changes like new looking widgets or a new color scheme feature that uses the device wallpaper to provide color scheme options. The option you choose when you change your wallpaper will be applied in the rest of the interface, changing the general color of the elements, such as the shadow of the notifications or the application drawer.

OneUI 4, however, brings more than just interface changes to Galaxy devices. For example, it offers a new photo sharing feature that allows you to edit the photo directly from the share sheet. There is also a new photo editing tool that allows you to remove an object from an image simply by drawing it with your finger.

The size of an image window can now be changed using the pinch-to-zoom feature, and emoji pairs combine two different emojis into a single animated image. Samsung has also incorporated new privacy features into Android 12, including an indicator when an app is accessing your camera or microphone. You can even use the new, more granular location controls that let you choose to share your exact location or just the general area.

Priority to S21

Samsung has been known to release major Android updates long after Google released the final version. To its credit, the company has gotten better at updating its phones in recent years. For example, last year, Samsung officially released Android 11 and OneUI 3 in early December for the Galaxy S20 line. Before that, the Android 10 update was released in mid-December 2019, while the Android 9 update was released in late January 2018. This year, Samsung has sped up the process by a few weeks, and the official launch of the announcement took place on November 15th. This is no small feat.

According to Hyesoon Sally Jeong, Samsung vice president and head of the executive research and development team, and Hyun Kim, head of UX core group, the main reason for the improvement in development time is that Samsung has divided the operating system into modules. . , making it easy to implement changes for a specific section of the operating system. Hopefully, the decision to modulate the OS will lead to even faster update cycles in the future, both for regular feature additions and for major OS updates.

As Samsung reports, the following Galaxy devices are expected to receive OneUI 4:

  • Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20 Plus, Galaxy S20 Ultra, Galaxy S20 FE;
  • Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Note 20 Ultra;
  • Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10 Plus, Galaxy S10 5G;

As for the Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3, Samsung expects the folding devices to receive the update by the end of the year. The exact timing of the update is pending, and carriers often play a role in the specifics of the update. However, the South Korean giant told that it is working to roll out the update as quickly as possible for all the devices listed above.
