Apple iPhone 13 test: our opinion –

If the arsenal of phones launched by Apple in 2021 has four models, it is actually two terminals that make up the new generation of iPhone: the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 13 Pro. The iPhone 13 mini and 13 Pro Max are smaller versions and largest of these devices, respectively.

The iPhone 13 and 13 mini received several important updatesincluding new cameras, a bigger battery, more storage, and a brighter screen. The iPhone 13 takes advantage of all the strengths of last year’s excellent iPhone 12 range. Some will be disappointed that it doesn’t differ drastically from previous models, but that’s part of its charm. Familiarity is one of the keys to the success of the iPhone.

IPhone 13 is available in € 909 with 128 GB of storage.

Some visual novelties

Both models come in five colors: blue, starlight, red (product), midnight, and pink. We find the flat edge design of the iPhone 12 and 12 mini. IPhone 13 has 6.1 inch screen and the 13 mini, a 5.4-inch screen. He stirs OLED, as in previous models. Refresh rate hangs on 60 Hz while it can go up to 120 Hz in the Pro versions. This in no way affects the overall rendering offered by the iPhone 13..

Aside from the colors, there are two notable design changes. The rear photographic module houses the two lenses arranged diagonally. The other difference is the size of the notch, which is thinner but still noticeable.

Other than that, the iPhone 13 and 13 mini come with a coating Ceramic shield, which covers the screen and are certified IP68
for dust and water resistance. They can survive a 6 meter dive for 30 minutes.

Both phones are heavier, but we didn’t notice it until we read the spec sheet. The extra 7-10 grams certainly comes from the presence of a larger battery.

Top-notch photographic performance

The iPhone 13 benefits from several major improvements in the photo part. The wide angle lens has a larger sensor and an optical stabilization system. To give you an idea, the sensor of the main camera of the iPhone 13 has the same pixel size as that of theiPhone 12 Pro Max last year, which at the time had the largest sensor in an iPhone. The ultra wide angle lens benefits from a new module that allows it to collect more light.

In use, these updates have not changed our experience, but we still notice some progress. There is less noise in photos taken in average light and ultra wide angle is better in low light conditions.

The Cinematic mode of the iPhone 13 is very pleasant to use

One of the most anticipated new features is the cinematic mode. It’s a bit like Portrait mode for video. But while Portrait mode applies artistic defocused blur only to the background, Cinematic mode can focus from subject to subject. The effect is spectacular. To achieve this, cinematic mode uses both rear cameras stereoscopically to capture 1080p video at 30 frames per second.

The iPhone can choose who to focus on and when to switch it to someone else, and it can also change the focus while recording. Decisions can also be made after recording a video. This gives you the flexibility to change focus, shift focus time from person to person, and adjust aperture to increase or decrease depth of field.

There are some limits to be aware of. First of all, you can’t use Cinematic mode when it’s dark. Then editing a cinematic video is pretty straightforward, but the keyframe controls where you can intervene in focus are small.

IPhone 13 lets you customize the way you take photos

Another nice (but dispensable) addition is Photography Styles, which allow you to change the way the camera processes shots to suit your preferences. There are four styles: Vivid, High Contrast, Hot, and Cold. These are not added filters after the fact, they are applied directly at the configuration level.

“Choose the Vivid style for bright, vibrant photos. Intense contrast for deeper shadows and richer colors. Hot or Cold to accentuate the golden or bluish tones, ”Apple explains.

For example, if you are used to editing your photos to add contrast after taking them, choose the High Contrast style. The phone will not only increase the contrast throughout the photo, it will analyze the subject and apply the style selectively. If you use the Warm style, the subject’s skin will not be orange. The iPhone will add warm tones to other parts of the photo. Of course, you can also do without these styles and use the standard photo mode.

The new A15 Bionic chip

The flea

A15 bionic
is the source of all these camera skills and everything you can do with iPhone 13. In our test, it was demonstrated very efficient for gaming, video and photo editing, FaceTime calls, and augmented reality applications. The A15 SoC that equips the iPhone 13 and 13 mini integrates a quad-core GPU while the A15 of the 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max has a GPU composed of five cores. In use, we could not discern the difference.

The iPhone 13 works with iOS 15. This update does not bring a radical revision and is a continuation of iOS 14. iOS 15 is composed hundreds of small improvements That add up to something more significant. If you want to delve into iOS 15, we recommend that you read the dedicated file.

Infallible resistance

Apple has not yet disclosed the battery capacity of its iPhones. However, the Cupertino company advertises 2.5 hours of battery life longer than the iPhone 12. In fact, the iPhone 13 is more durable. If it is not the most attractive smartphone in this field, it marks a good progression with an autonomy that is close to both days when alternating energy efficient tasks (texting, emails, social media, video streaming) and demanding tasks (gaming, taking pictures, making videos).

There is no power supply in the terminal box. The device supports a charging power of 20W and find 100% and 1h30. Long time especially when we look at what the competition offers upside down.

One point to the competition

IPhone 13 is available from € 909 and for that price you can get a Samsung Galaxy S21 (€ 859), a Xiaomi Mi 11 (€ 749) or a Google Pixel 6 Pro (€ 899).

These three Android smartphones benefit from a sublime display, show very good performance, and benefit from an effective photo section in many situations.

conclusion

The iPhone 13 is Apple’s more balanced formula as the iPhone 12 was last year. The new model captures the strengths of its predecessor while displaying a slightly more serious range. We may regret the deadlock in the 120Hz refresh rate reserved for the Pro models, but Apple gives us excellent image quality at 60Hz.

Once again this year, the iPhone is a must-have for any consumer looking for a complete high-end smartphone. However, this flagship is not a disruptive model, it does not invite you to change generation if you already have an iPhone 12.
