Apple updates App Store rules on alternative payments

Apple updated its App Store review guidelines to reflect an agreement reached in late August with developers in the United States who communicated with customers about alternative payment methods outside of an iOS app.

After the deal, Apple said it would allow developers to use media, such as email, to share information about payment methods outside of their iOS apps and avoid paying Apple fees.

Apple announced on Friday the effective removal of a section of guideline 3.1.3 that read: “Developers may not use information obtained within the application to target individual users outside of the application to use purchase methods other than the application. in-app purchase (such as sending an individual user an email about other purchase methods after that person has signed up for an in-app account). “

Promote alternative purchase methods outside of applications.

The new guidelines state that certain types of apps, such as reading apps and person-to-person apps, can now “use purchase methods other than in-app purchases.” »Reading applications include magazines, newspapers, books, audio, music and video services.

Developers cannot use the iOS application itself to communicate alternative payment methods to customers, but can communicate outside of the application to notify them of the choice, such as through an email address already purchased.

“The applications in this section cannot, within the application, encourage users to use any purchase method other than in-app purchase. Developers can send out-of-app communications to their user base about purchasing methods other than in-app purchase, ”says Apple in updated guideline 3.1.3.

These changes aim to create a fairer system for developers whose income depends on Apple’s platforms. The settlement allowed Apple to answer its “anti-leadership” charges and ended a two-year class action lawsuit filed by about 67,000 developers.

An update in the context of a legal battle

Apple also introduced a new guide to using an iOS app to collect a user’s contact information, such as name and email address.

“Applications can request basic contact information (such as name and email address) as long as the request is optional for the user, the functions and services do not depend on providing such information and that the application complies with all others provisions of these guidelines, including limitations on collecting information from children, ”says Apple’s guideline.

Google and Apple earlier this year halved commissions on the app to 15% of sales for the developers’ first $ 1 million in annual sales.

These changes to Apple’s guidelines came into effect amid a legal battle with Fortnite maker Epic Games. This month, Apple appealed a September ruling in the United States, requesting the suspension of the court order to allow iOS app developers to offer their own in-app purchasing system.
