Over the past year, Apple has reportedly paused and resumed production of its own chip for its flagship iPhone. The Silicon Valley giant will now produce its own 5G modem that will replace the Qualcomm chips currently used in iPhones.
Apple product analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has been saying for months that Apple’s attempts to create a 5G chip proved futile, but now claims that Apple’s own chip will debut in the next iPhone SE, due next year.
The analyst therefore predicts that the iPhone SE 4 will include Apple’s own 5G modem, but other details are leaking. The analyst says the iPhone SE 4 will look like the iPhone 14 with a 6.1-inch OLED display, which is quite different from its predecessor’s 4.7-inch LCD screen.
iPhone SE 4 may be released in March 2024
By moving to an OLED display, the new iPhone SE could feature higher image contrast, better image quality, lower power consumption, higher refresh rates, a fuller color gamut, and a thinner screen.
According to Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone SE 4 could be released in March 2024 and feature Face ID, making the iPhone SE 3 the last iPhone with a physical home button and Touch ID.
However, just last month, Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple has canceled plans to develop a fourth version of the iPhone SE. Reason? Difficulties in developing a homemade 5G chip. However, at this year’s MWC, Qualcomm CEO Christiano Amon said he expects Apple’s latest chip to be ready as early as next year.
Home modem expansion to the rest of the Apple range
It is this statement that now leads Ming-Chi Kuo to conclude that the new iPhone SE will, in fact, be the product that Apple will use to test the performance of its 5G chip.
According to other analysts, Apple plans to test its new chip on only a few products. Until the company is confident in its technology, the Qualcomm Snapdragon X70 5G modem is sure to find use in the iPhone 15 models.
According to MacRumors, it’s possible that Apple’s new 5G modem will be housed in less brand-sensitive items like the iPad or iPhone SE. While the new iPhone SE performs well technologically and financially, less technologically demanding Apple devices such as the Apple Watch and iPad will use Apple modems in the future.
