Are screens bad for the eyes? – Sciences and future

CJAMY. Camille Gaubert’s column is broadcast daily on the “C Jamy” program, hosted by Jamy Gourmaud from Monday to Friday at 5pm on France 5.

LEDs are diodes rich in blue light. Therefore, be careful not to spend hours in front of the screen, which could have a detrimental effect on your eyesight. While blue light won’t cause you to lose your sight in the short term, it could increase your risk of developing AMD as you age.

What is AMD?

AMD, or age-related macular degeneration, is the loss of vision in the center of the retina. Produces as a black spot in the middle of your field of vision. If AMD is a disease of the elderly, it is from childhood that the destiny of our eyes is at stake. In fact, our eyes are protected by the lens, which filters part of the blue light thanks to the yellow tint that it acquires with age. But children have a transparent lens and are therefore vulnerable. For example, we know that people with high exposure to sunlight during childhood have AMD at a younger age than others. Why ? Because the sun also emits blue light! In fact, just as our skin has a capital of sun, our eyes have a capital of light. By continually exposing our eyes, little by little we nibble on this capital. Especially when it comes to blue light, since it is the most energetic of all, ahead of green, red or yellow. However, the LEDs that fill our screens are very rich in blue light.

No certainty, but caution is required

But suddenly, do we really know if the blue light emitted by LEDs has the same effect as strong sun exposure? No. At the moment, there is no certainty: we will have to wait 20 to 30 years for the children who grew up in front of the screens to grow old. Only in this way will researchers be able to see if they develop AMD younger than their ancestors. But even if we can’t conclude yet, there are still reasons to be careful. Studies in rats, which have transparent crystals like children, show that strong exposure to blue light damages their retina. You can use blue light filters, but their effect is variable … and above all not tested!
