Artificial intelligence improves the quality of point-to-point welds – La Tribune Auto

A pilot project carried out at Audi’s site in Neckarsulm uses theartificial intelligence for control the quality of welds in mass production.

The solution is developed collaboratively with Siemens and Amazon Web Services as part of the Volkswagen Group Industrial Cloud.

The solution is expected to be rolled out at other Volkswagen group production sites.

Audi is improving quality control of point-to-point welds in body production using artificial intelligence.

About 5,300 welding points They are necessary to assemble the parts that make up the body of an Audi A6.

Until now, the production staff use ultrasound for control manually the quality of resistance welding processes (abbreviated WPS in German) on the basis ofrandom scans.

Manufacturing, innovation management, digitization planning and IT experts are testing a much smarter way to determine weld quality at the Neckarsulm site. As part of the “WPS Analytics” pilot project, the team led by Mathias Mayer and Andreas Rieker uses artificial intelligence (AI) to automatically detect quality anomalies in real time.

Michael Haeffner, Head of Delivery Management Digitization for Production and Logistics at Audi, is pleased with the projects carried out at the site: “As a pilot plant for digital production and logistics for the Volkswagen Group, our goal is to test and develop digital solutions from vehicle manufacturing to use for series production Using AI, we are testing here an important key technology that will allow Audi and the site to be “future-proofed”.

L ‘algorithm Behind this, its graphical user interface (dashboard) and an application for in-depth quality analysis are currently being tested as part of body production for the Audi A6 and Audi A7 models at the Neckarsulm site.

The objective of the project is that the algorithm evaluates almost 100% of the weld points defined during body fabrication.

The long-term vision is that, in the future, the quality of welding processes can be automatically controlled and continuously optimized.

Mathias Mayer has been working on the use of AI in Audi production for five years and sees the use of “WPS Analytics” as an exciting opportunity: “The algorithm serves as a model for other applications in connected manufacturing. In addition, it allows us advance existing digital solutions such as predictive maintenance. “
