Right now, the best deal (other than the $79 Chromebook 3) in this category is the Asus 2-in-1 Chromebook for $179.99, although the 14-inch taller Asus is indeed very attractive. What we appreciate most is the 1080p screen, 8GB of RAM and a fast processor, and the $179 Asus 2-in-1 offers it all at the best price. (Actually, we don’t consider SSD storage space a deciding factor, except for game storage, since Chromebooks are so cloud-focused.) The Asus Chromebook C425 and Asus 14-inch Chromebooks are fairly attractively priced, with just 4GB of RAM holding them back.
In the mid-range category, the Flex 5i offers slightly more performance than the Flip C433… but it’s hard to go past $70 less. Frankly, the categories of “budget” and “midrange” are beginning to blur. By the way, we usually consider the Core m3 to be more powerful than the Celeron N4020, which is more powerful than the MediaTek MT8183, although not by much. A laptop-class processor like a Core i3 or Ryzen 3 will easily top it all. If you’re looking for a Lenovo Chromebook tablet, the IdeaPad Duet 3 is a great deal.
Avoid the $169.99 (Amazon) Asus Chromebook CX1 deal you can see elsewhere. The Celeron N3350 is ancient on the inside, and the other offerings on our list easily beat it.
Frequently asked Questions
What should I look for on a Chromebook on Black Friday?
We still expect low-end Chromebooks — say, with a 768p screen, an Intel Celeron processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 16GB SSD — to cost around $100. And if they get a lot less than $100, they essentially become a pantry for most people.
Still, look for these specs in a respectable Chromebook: an Intel Celeron N4000 chip or better, 8GB of RAM, and a 1080p screen. The Pentium Silver N6000 processor is a step forward. The Core m3-8100Y should be fine, though mid-range or premium Chromebooks include laptop-class chips like a Core i3 or AMD Ryzen (not Athlon) processor.
More memory (i.e. 8GB rather than 4GB RAM) will allow for more browser tabs and a smoother browsing experience. The 1080p screen gives you the same viewing experience as on a laptop. Onboard storage doesn’t really matter much, though for apps, screenshots and the like, keeping at least 32GB is preferable.
If you’re familiar with our long explanation of laptops and Chromebooks, you know that one of the potential pitfalls is buying a Chromebook whose support window is about to expire. We’re trying to keep this in mind so you don’t get stuck with a Chromebook that will end support in the near future.
Which Chromebooks rank PCWorld the highest?
Our editors review Chromebooks regularly, so be sure to check out our ranking of the best Chromebooks of 2022. We recommend a wide range of prices, and the article offers a great guide to buying a Chromebook. What’s more, some of our best items will likely go on sale before or during Black Friday.
Should you buy a Chromebook on Black Friday?
In general, yes, Black Friday is a good time to buy a Chromebook. Unlike other product categories, we generally don’t see Chromebook makers secretly raising prices in the weeks leading up to Black Friday just to offer “discounts” during Black Friday itself. However, we are seeing offers being offered on older hardware. To that end, you may see “offers” that we exclude simply because we think you will be dissatisfied with your purchase.
