BlackBerry: a 5G smartphone with physical keyboard in 2021 for a new renaissance

In failure with its mobile division, BlackBerry has chosen to offer its brand in the form of a license. After a first partnership with TCL which ended in August 2020, the Canadian firm sold its license to the companies OnwardMobility and FIH Mobile Limited, a subsidiary of Foxconn.

Peter Franklin, CEO of OnwardMobility announced last August that he wanted to launch a 5G smartphone in the first half of 2021 and this seems to be confirmed. In an interview with Nikkei Asia, he specifies that the objective is to offer this new smartphone ” as soon as possible“. It also gives priority to the European and North American markets.

The return of the touch-tone telephone

The niche in any case is always the same, namely a device with a keyboard that brings better productivity and an efficient software suite. Emphasis will also be placed on safety with a dedicated team.

After the commercial failures of the KEYone and KEY2, the task is in any case difficult. Competition is fierce and the market is not as dynamic as it used to be. On the other hand, the rise in the prices of high-end models leaves an opening for BlackBerry, at least if the positioning is correct.
