Can we use another Covid vaccine for the booster dose than the one we already had?

Zebulon’s question

Can we use another Covid vaccine for the booster dose than the one we already had?

Hello Zebulon,

In France, the health authorities authorize the principle of “heterologous” vaccination, that is, carried out with successively different vaccines. It is on this principle that the High Health Authority recommended that people vaccinated with AstraZeneca in the first dose, can make their second injection with a messenger RNA vaccine.

Regarding the 3rd dose, the booster doses are performed only with mRNA vaccines (Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna), both very effective against severe forms of Covid-19, including those linked to the Delta variant.

These two vaccines can be used independently of the vaccine used in the context of the first vaccination schedule. If you received your first doses with a Moderna vaccine, you can receive a third dose of Pfizer and vice versa.

Finally, keep in mind that for people under the age of 30, and for them only, the Department of Health currently recommends the Pfizer vaccine as a booster dose.

Good for you.
