A neural network recognizes anonymous gamers by their style. But it could also one day stalk you online.

Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, 31 years old, world chess champion.

Researchers at the University of Toronto have trained an artificial intelligence (AI) to identify anonymous chess players by their style of play Objective: to help players improve with a tool with less “alien” style of play than Deep Blue and AlphaZero AIs, reports the magazine “Science”.

To do this, they fed the neural system thousands of human games played on the Lichess website by collecting those from people who had played at least 1,000 times. Once trained, the AI was tested with 100 games involving 3,000 known players, as well as 100 games run by a mystery player. To complicate the task, the first fifteen moves of each game were masked. By detecting the best part, the system identified the mystery player with a high success rate of 86%, the researchers reported at the NeurIPS conference.

Event organizers say they found the study technically impressive but ethically dangerous. They agreed to have it come forward, on the condition that they mention the privacy risks. The tool “could be of interest to vendors and law enforcement,” one said. Aware that it could be used to identify and target Internet users online, its creators refuse to publish their AI code.
