Cannabis remains the most widely used drug in France, according to study – Sciences et Avenir

Cannabis remains the illicit drug most consumed in France by almost one in ten adults, according to Public Health France’s 2020 health barometer presented on Thursday by the French Observatory for Drugs and Drug Addiction (OFDT).

In 2020, 11% of French 18-64 year olds reported using cannabis during the year. Therefore, cannabis continues to be the most widespread illicit drug in the country, since the last study that focused on 2016 when the proportion was the same.

Teenagers especially like it. At 17 years of age, more than 40% of them indicate having consumed it during the year, as in 2016. Among the 18-24 years, they are almost 26%. The number decreases with age and only affects about 2% among people 55 to 64 years old.

The profile of smokers also reveals a male prevalence: 15% of men are concerned, compared to 7.5% of women.

The OFDT indicates an evolution among cannabis users since 1992 with on the one hand an “increase in the proportion of women who have already used cannabis”, and on the other hand “an aging of consumers in the year who are increasingly in his thirty and forty “.

The number of regular users (at least ten drinks per month) has “decreased slightly”, “from 3.6% in 2017 to 3.2% in 2020.”

More generally, almost half of the French (46%) admit to having used cannabis in their lifetime. According to the OFDT, this figure has remained “stable since 2017”, after a period of increase since 2000.

The joint is still the most common form of cannabis use, 94% of the time. Some prefer to vape it (2.3%) or ingest it in the form of food or infusion (2.2%). The water pipe and the “bong” are still rare (less than 1%).

61% of users consume the herb of the plant, while 37% prefer the resin. In 95% of the cases, they are not taken cigars but mixed with tobacco.

France is the country with the most cannabis consumers among the countries of the European Union, where the proportion of those who have already smoked it averages 27%.

The OFDT study does not specify the use of other drugs.
