The first doses of Johnson & Johnson’s anti-Covid serum will be administered starting this Wednesday, by appointment. Some cantons will prioritize those with medical contraindications to the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.

Announced in late September, the arrival of 150,000 doses of Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine is already effective. In French-speaking Switzerland, the first injections will take place this Wednesday, in the cantons of Vaud and Friborg. Geneva, Valais, Jura and Neuchâtel will follow suit. Each canton has established its own rules for the administration of this viral vector serum. Priority should be given to people who cannot receive a messenger RNA vaccine due to a medical contraindication, but those who prefer this solution, rather than one of the other vaccines offered in Switzerland, will also be able to benefit from it, within the available dose limit.

Remember that a single injection of the Janssen vaccine is sufficient and paves the way for obtaining the Covid certificate 22 days later. This serum is not recommended for children under 18 years of age, nor for pregnant women or people with immunodeficiency.

Vaud and Freiburg, from Wednesday 6 October

The canton of Vaud will reserve a small portion of its 13,400 doses for people with a medical contraindication to messenger RNA vaccines. The rest will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. You must schedule an appointment through the Coronavax site or contact the direct line at 058 715 11 00.

In Freiburg, 5,500 doses of the Janssen vaccine will be available. Also in this case, the canton has planned to keep 500 doses for people forced by medical reasons to give up other vaccines. It is mandatory to register in advance. On the other hand, for Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, the canton still offers walk-in vaccination periods. In particular, the center will open exceptionally in Forum Friborg this Sunday, October 10, throughout the day. This will be the last moment to be able to justify having received a first dose of vaccine and, therefore, continue to benefit from free screening until the end of November.

The other cantons follow

In Geneva, authorities stressed that only people living in the canton would have access to the Janssen vaccine, given the limited number of doses received. And, there too, it is necessary to make an appointment in advance. The first doses will be given on Thursday.

In Valais, the first vaccinations with Johnson & Johnson serum will take place on Friday. You will need to register to benefit from it. Initially, only the Sion center will be able to manage it. But the following week it will also be available at the Brig and Collombey centers. The authorities emphasize that the arrival of this third product will complicate the organization of the centers and recommend making an appointment, including for the injection of a messenger RNA vaccine.

In the canton of Neuchâtel, the opening of injections with the Janssen vaccine has not yet been announced, but it should take place very soon. Initially, the 3,000 doses will be reserved for people with medical contraindications to messenger RNA vaccines. Then, depending on availability, they will be available to the rest of the population. To benefit from it, you must contact the vaccination secretariat, on the number 032 889 21 21.

In the canton of Jura, the Janssen will only be offered at the Courtételle vaccination center and by appointment. Those interested should contact the hotline on 032 420 99 00. Again, the start date for vaccinations with this product has not yet been announced.
