Nov. 2 (Reuters) – An advisory panel from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) unanimously recommended the use of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer with BioNTech for children ages 5 to 11 years.
They felt that the benefits outweigh the risks of administering the vaccine, paving the way for the start of vaccination for this age group on Wednesday.
The recommendation must be formally validated by CDC Director Rochelle Walensky for the launch of the vaccination campaign for children ages 5 to 11.
The US drug regulator, the FDA, had given its approval last Friday.
Prior to these decisions, the US federal administration and Pfizer had already begun distributing vaccines nationwide to allow for rapid deployment when most children returned to classrooms.
The White House said earlier this week that the United States has enough doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to immunize all 28 million children between the ages of 5 and 11.
