COVID-19 Cases Rise: Quebecers Are Worried About Christmas

One month before Christmas and when the number of COVID-19 cases exceeds 900, on Wednesday, many Quebecers wonder if they will be able to spend the holidays with their families this year.

“For now we have more or less planned to do something with friends, but we are aware that it can also be canceled at the last minute,” says a parent while queuing in front of a screening center.

“We crossed our fingers for the Christmas festivities,” also says a mother while waiting in the same line.

The number of COVID-19 victims increased on Wednesday, as Public Health reports 902 new cases.

“Sure that the number of cases has almost doubled in the last month is something to take into account, but it is clear that, I would say, the most important indicator is going to be the number of people hospitalized,” maintains Dr. Gaston De Serres, medical consultant for the National Institute of Public Health of Quebec (INSPQ).

While the number of hospitalizations seems fairly controlled in the province, many outbreaks still occur, especially in primary schools and nurseries.

Vaccination for children ages five to 11, which began Tuesday, could be a game changer, though second doses won’t be given until after the holidays.
