Covid-19: is the fifth wave “dazzling” in France?

The weekend was marked by protests across Europe over the reestablishment of sanitary restrictions to deal with the fifth wave of the Covid-19 epidemic. In France, the new contaminations after having doubled last week, have not fallen below the bar of 15,000 daily cases this week, however, it is not the time for new sanitary limitations decided on Thursday by Emmanuel Macron. But the government spokesman warns this Sunday: the progression of the fifth wave of Covid-19 is “dazzling” in France. We take stock.

What is the situation in France?

. The situation is more worrying in the Ardèche, with an incidence rate of 350 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The French average is high with 171 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

“Dazzling” growth in the number of cases

If the French figures are still well below those of our European neighbors, with more than 1,000 cases of Covid-19 per 100,000 inhabitants in Austria, or an incidence rate close to 500 among our German neighbors, the progression of the virus it is sensitive in France. . The increase in pollution has been 20% weekly since the beginning of November, a constant figure that allows Guillaume Rozier, creator of the CovidTracker epidemic data site, to speak of “exponential growth.” An average of 13,795 positive Covid19 cases are taken every day, an increase (+ 46%) compared to last week.

There are currently 1,333 intensive care patients in French hospitals, a figure lower than what we saw last September, but which is increasing slightly (+ 10%). Classes take off

Another alarming sign, the number of closed classes reached a record at the end of the week. 4,048 classes in schools, colleges or secondary schools, closed for positive cases, this is three times more than before the All Saints holidays. A figure to be tempered with the return of the reinforced protocol in schools, however, specifies the Ministry of National Education, effectively foresees a class closure from the first case detected in the first grade. Last Monday, the mask also reappeared in all elementary schools.

No new health restrictions announced

If the authorities are monitoring the epidemic closely. There is no new restrictive measure on the agenda at the moment, Emmanuel Macron said this Friday in the newspaper La Voix du Nord. Austria is installing a general containment of its population since this Monday after having confined its residents “not vaccinated” for five days, Emmanuel Macron believes that an isolation even reserved for the unvaccinated is not for the moment “not necessary in France” .

The retirement campaign launched in early September for people over 65 and residents of nursing homes will be extended to people over 50 on Monday.
