In the last 24 hours there have been 895 deaths caused by the new coronavirus, according to the government registry.

Last week, the country had already broken its record for daily deaths four times.

The government tally officially reaches 211,696 dead, making Russia the most heartbroken country in Europe. But the real cost is much higher.

The Rosstat Institute of Statistics, which has a broader definition of deaths from COVID-19, reported more than 350,000 deaths at the end of July.

New contaminations also continue to increase. As of Tuesday, they reached 25,110 cases, including 3,827 in Moscow, the capital, and 1,894 in Saint Petersburg, the second largest city in the country.

“The dynamics (of the epidemic, editor’s note) that we are seeing in recent days is causing great concern. The morbidity rate is increasing in most Russian regions, ”Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Michoustine said Monday during a government meeting on combating the spread of the coronavirus.

However, no sanitary restrictions or containment measures have been announced, as the authorities have always shown their desire to preserve the economy.

Since mid-June, Russia has been hit hard by the more contagious Delta variant of the virus.

The epidemic is reinforced by a laborious vaccination campaign, the authorities’ refusal to introduce stricter sanitary measures and the lack of respect of the population for the use of masks.

According to figures from the specialized site Gogov, only 29.3% of Russians are currently fully vaccinated, while there are several national vaccines.
