Covid: a girl vaccinated by mistake with the Moderna vaccine, her parents file a complaint

In France, a 10-year-old girl received a dose of the Moderna vaccine, reserved for adults, instead of the pediatric dose from Pfizer. His parents filed a complaint.

The case dates back to last Wednesday, when the vaccination campaign for children aged 5 to 11 began with our French neighbors. That day, a 10-year-old girl was vaccinated “by mistake with half a dose of Moderna – intended for adults – instead of the pediatric Pfizer”, at a vaccination center located in Avranches (La Mancha). This is what the Normandy Regional Health Agency reports on Wednesday.

“The father filed a complaint for these events,” Cyril Lacombe, a prosecutor for the Republic of Coutances, told AFP, confirming information from the local press.

“This error, having been immediately noticed by the health professionals of the center, the family was received on the spot by the referring doctor,” continues the ARS in an email to AFP, specifying that the minor did not do so. Immediate reaction and “it is doing well”.

The nurse gave him the injection and he immediately realized his mistake. It shouldn’t have happened.

But how to explain this error? According to the director of the Avranches-Granville Hospital Center, a health professional referred the girl to a bad queue.

“We are running several lines of vaccination at the same time. And at one point there was a slippage. The girl was asked to sit in the wrong place because there was no room for the correct one. The nurse gave her the injection and she immediately gave herself realized that he was “. error. It shouldn’t have happened, “Joanny Allombert told our colleagues at France Blue.

In Wallonia, vaccination of children aged 5 to 11 years was postponed until mid-January

At the beginning of November, the French High Health Authority (HAS) had advised against the use of the Moderna vaccine for those under 30 years of age, based in particular on a study according to which it slightly increases the risk of myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) and pericarditis (inflammation of the membrane that surrounds the heart), especially in young male adolescents. However, these cases remain very rare, and the benefits of the vaccine continue to outweigh this risk, experts say.

In Wallonia, the vaccination of children aged 5 to 11 years – initially scheduled for the end of December – has been postponed until mid-January, in order to favor the administration of boosters to adults. As in France, vaccination of children will be carried out with an adapted version of the Pfizer vaccine (10 micrograms, or one third of the adult dose). This vaccine will be given in 2 doses 21 days apart.
