Covid: EU recommends a second booster dose for those over 60 – Sciences et Avenir

The European Union Commission and health agencies on Monday recommended a second booster dose of the Covid-19 vaccine for everyone over 60 instead of 80 so far in the face of a new “huge wave” of the current case.

“I call on Member States to immediately offer second boosters to all people over 60 and vulnerable people, and I call on all people who have the right to be vaccinated,” said European Commissioner for Health Stella Kyriakides.

The recommendation also applies to all vulnerable people, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) said in a joint press release.

In April, two EU health agencies had already recommended this second booster dose – in most cases the fourth dose – for those over 80, but signaled that this could be followed by an extension for those over 60.

Europe is facing “an increase in Covid cases, as well as an upward trend in hospitalizations or emergency admissions in several countries, mainly due to the BA.5 Omicron sub-option,” said ECDC Director Andrea Ammon. quoted in the press release.

“This signals the start of a new large-scale wave of Covid-19 across the European Union. Too many people are still at risk of serious Covid infection, whom we must protect as soon as possible, ”the European official insists.

According to the latest data from the World Health Organization for its Europe zone of about fifty countries, the number of Covid cases has risen sharply since the end of May.

The number of new daily cases topped 675,000 on Friday, returning to early April levels after a strong winter wave.

On the other hand, according to the ECDC and the EMA, “There is no clear evidence at this stage to justify giving a second booster dose to people under 60 who are not at higher risk of developing a serious form” of Covid-19. .
