OTTAWA – Health Canada data show seniors are getting more COVID-19 shots than seasonal flu shots.
Dr. Howard Nju, deputy chief of public health in Canada, says nearly 90% of seniors over 80 have received at least one dose of one of the vaccines; among people over 70, this figure is 80%.
However, Health Canada’s annual review of seasonal influenza vaccinations found that approximately 70% of Canadians aged 65 and over were vaccinated against the influenza virus last fall.
So far, nearly 12 million Canadians have received at least their first dose of one of the COVID-19 vaccines. Almost a quarter of a million doses are administered daily in Canada.
Dr Nju believes the more serious consequences of COVID-19 in older people may have prompted many to travel for the vaccine. He now hopes that this experience could help increase vaccination in general.
