Crosscall Action-X5 test: our opinion –

Like most smartphones in its category, the Crosscall Action-X5 has a very thick casing that protects the internal components in the event of an impact. He is US MIL-STD-810H Certified (15 tests), withstands extreme temperatures (-25 ° C to + 60 ° C) and has a IP68 certification. This means that it can be submerged under 2 meters of water for 30 minutes. Crosscall also specifies that this resistance is valid for salty and chlorinated water, so you are not afraid of the beach or the swimming pool.

Some parts of the phone are a bit “rubbery” which improves grip and provides a bit of grip when wearing gloves. In any case, it does not go unnoticed in the palm of your hand with its dimensions of 161.5 x 77.8 x 13.35 mm and its weight of 235.5 grams.

We noticed that the frame sticks out a bit from the screen, a designer tip to absorb shocks. By the way, the phone screen is protected by glass. Corning Gorilla Glass 5 that (in theory) survives falls from 1.2 meters high. Therefore, we are far from absolute resistance, and the additional protection will not be too much.

Crosscall has chosen to keep plastic caches in front of the port Audio out and USB-C connector. The protection is thus reinforced against water and small stones, but it is far from ideal for everyday life. We allow ourselves to pull on the little tabs, they seem quite robust and should withstand the ravages of time.

Owner’s Tour

In addition to the traditional buttons to turn off, on or adjust the volume, The Action-X5 stands out for its programmable keys. You can choose between a long press or a triple press, then select the task to perform, for example: the flashlight or a contact. It’s a really practical addition that you get used to quickly. We also appreciate the LED notifications and 3.5mm jack audio output to connect wired headphones, a rarity these days.

General phone presentation:

The Action-X5 is equipped with a fingerprint reader, is built into the phone’s on / off button. We regret that it is not a little bit bigger and that the analysis of the fingerprint is not done automatically when we put our finger on it. You need to press the button, then wait for the recognition.

You may have noticed in the drawing above that the speaker is not visible. The reason is simple, it is located on the back of the device, which is not an ideal option as the sound is muffled when placed on a desk or table. However, we see that power is important and quality is correct when not pushed to the limit.

Display: a convincing IPS LCD panel

Crosscall opted for a panel with IPS LCD technology, classic for a device of this type. Its 5.45-inch diagonal in 18/9 format is comfortable for browsing the Internet or consulting applications.

The definition of 1440 x 720 pixels is quite high at 294 ppi, this gives detailed pictures. The the brightness is enough (500 cd / m2 according to Crosscall) and the contrast quite good, although it does not match an Amoled panel. However, don’t expect a big update or HDR support.

Crosscall explains that its screen is “wet touch”, so using it with wet fingers would be possible in theory … In fact, it is still very dangerous and you should not rely too much on it. If you want to take photos or film underwater, it will be easier to use the programmable physical button.

Performance: the big disappointment

Performance is the main weak point of this device.. There is a small profit on paper compared to Core-X4 last year, but the overall feeling seems less compelling. There are slowdowns here and there, applications that are slow to start, and even some slow loading of websites. Obviously, this does not bode well for the future, when the memory is full … It may be an optimization problem, but the benchmarks confirm in any case that it is not lightning. War:

You get 231 single-core and 1145 multi-core on Geekbench and 5734 on PCMark, the equivalent of a OnePlus Nord N100, an entry-level device under € 150. The Action-X5 is not a cheap smartphone (list price € 549.90), we are entitled to expect better performance.

The interface is that of Android 11 Basic with some additions to the menus and additional applications such as the camera.

Data sheet :

  • Octa-core Snapdragon 662: 4 x 2 GHz and 4 x 1.8 GHz
  • Graphics processor: Adreno 610
  • RAM: 4 go
  • Storage: 64 GB (expandable by micro-SD)

Autonomy: you must do much better

We imagine that a device that is 13.35mm thick and 16cm long has enough space to accommodate an XXL battery, but this is not the case as it is satisfied with a 3850 mAh. For comparison, a popular smartphone like the Redmi Note 10 Pro It has a 5,020 mAh battery.

The Action-X5 will not be part of our selection of smartphones with the best battery life. It hardly takes a day away from an outlet, and sometimes you even have to refuel before going into the evening. It is quite weak and even disappointing for this type of device that wants to be outdoors.

Crosscall offers a 6000 mAh external battery, compatible with its X-Link magnetic system, but the downside is that it takes up even more space. On the other hand, you can use the external battery as a stand to put the phone down while watching digital content …

Action-X5 and X-Power external battery

Photo: often poor

The part of the photo revolves around a 48 MP main sensor (80 ° angle of view) and a 13 MP ultra wide angle (120 ° angle of view). On the front, it’s a 13 MP camera (120 °) who takes care of the selfies.

The French manufacturer insisted on the quality of its new technical solution, but in fact, we are not at the height of a smartphone with a similar price positioning as a Google Pixel 4A, a OnePlus Nord 2 or a Samsung Galaxy A52. If in the middle of the day, the Action-X5 is delirious, things get very complicated when the light goes out.

Main Sensor – Rendering is fine, but image lacks detail.

Wide-angle sensor: image is overexposed, photo angles are blurry, quality is poor

Main sensor: even in this photo taken in very good condition, the rendering lacks precision

Main sensor without night mode: grain is very important, accuracy is poor, almost looks like fog

Main sensor with night mode – Grain management is better, but rendering is still very average.

Main sensor: rendering is very smooth, the person’s face in the background appears blurry

Wide-angle front camera

These additional features that bring real added value

  • The X-Link magnetic system:

The most interesting feature of the Crosscall devices is undoubtedly the X-Link magnetic system that gives access to an ecosystem of accessories: external battery, pole, bicycle, motorcycle or car accessory, belt clip, desk stand, charging cable ., Harness, memory. card reader. There is everything you need to delight fans of extreme sports, too bad the quality of the photos is disappointing …

  • Video stabilization “hyperstab”:

If the photo part is disappointing, the video works a little better with good management of the transition between shadows and light. The “hyperstab” mode, accessible from the wide-angle sensor, provides good image stabilization.

  • X-Story, X-Talk, X-Safe, X-Sensor:

Crosscall offers several relevant applications: X-Story allows you to make a small video editing of the sequences that we filmed during the day. X-Talk works like a walkie-talkie. X-Sensor provides access to data from the phone’s sensors, such as brightness, compass, or geographic coordinates. Finally, X-Safe collects your personal information and allows you to send an emergency message.

Limited performance, a little tight autonomy, sometimes perfectible design. The Crosscall Action-X5 once again leaves us with an unfinished aftertaste. There is a good room for improvement, especially considering the price … There are, however, some positive points such as the quality of the IPS screen, the ecosystem with X-Link and the video part supported by the technology. hyperstab.
