Bad news for users of the Crypto.com cryptocurrency exchange platform. In fact, the latter suffered a cyberattack at the end of which the perpetrators managed to steal more than 30 million dollars. The information was confirmed by the platform, which indicated that 438 users were affected in this incident.
Total loss is estimated at $33.8 million
Among the loot recovered by the authors of the attack is, according to Crypto.com, about 66,200 dollars in other currencies, 443 bitcoins and 4836 ethers. Based on the current value of cryptocurrencies, the total loss is estimated at $33.8 million. It must be said that the thieves were able to circumvent the security systems established by the platform. Thus, they managed to bypass the two-factor authentication (2FA) system. In addition, after initially estimating Crypto.com’s losses at $15 million, the security company PeckShield had indicated that the perpetrators of the cyberattack had used the Tornado Cash tool to launder the stolen goods. The latter makes it possible to hide the link between the source and destination funds.
Please note that attacks targeting this type of platform have become more and more frequent lately. According to the American media NBC News, cybercriminals stole more than 10 million dollars, in 2021, in more than twenty attacks.
