Chronic Cyberpunk 2077 surpasses The Witcher 3
Bad console versions of its last title, a vague refund policy, a potential legal action … In recent days, CD Projekt has seen it all. Yet the studio is rising to the top of the sales rankings. Fkz explains this in today’s daily.
Available since December 10 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series and Stadia, Cyberpunk 2077 has been the object of the discontent of the players, in particular because of less than optimal console versions. A grumbling that prompted a public apology from CD Projekt and offered reimbursement to players unhappy with their experience. As a result, Sony is removing Cyberpunk 2077 from its store and offering its full refund. Without removing the game from the Microsoft Store, Xbox follows Sony and also offers the refund. Yet despite the bad publicity of these events, the title is selling very well.
Cyberpunk number one
In the wind of critics, CD Projekt also unveiled Cyberpunk 2077 sales figures. Fkz takes up the studio’s statement, available on its official page. He mentions that 5 million copies, physical and digital, have been sold since the game’s release. Added to the pre-order figures, sales of the title peak at 13 million copies distributed as of December 20. In addition, Fkz specifies that CD Projekt took into account the reimbursed games, without specifying precise numbers. As evidenced by the good reception of the game, it is the most sold on Steam since its launch. For comparison, it topped The Witcher 3 which had sold “only” 4 million copies after two weeks.
According to Fkz, this sales report can reassure investors that the stock is in good health. He recalls that CD Projekt is in the crosshairs of his investors: one of them is a lawyer and could initiate legal action against the Polish studio for “misrepresentation for financial gain“.
