Digital education: the EPFL Thymio robot celebrates its 10th anniversary

Created at EPFL in 2011, the Thymio educational robot celebrates its 10th anniversary. It is now present in thousands of copies in schools and private homes. A “simple, intuitive, fun and gender neutral” tool to introduce children to programming.

Some 74,000 robots have been produced in ten years. And more than half of them are now equipping Swiss and French schools, the EPFL announced Thursday. At the beginning of the year, Vaud decided to implement the little robot in all of his primary classes.

The robot is scalable and can help students throughout their schooling. At EPFL, the courses are sometimes based on the use of Thimio robots. The enthusiasm is due in large part to the simplicity and versatility of the concept, created in association with the Lausanne Cantonal Art School, according to the press release.

Equipped with only two motors, Thymio can emit music and colors. Interact with your environment thanks to five touch buttons and a battery of sensors.

“Hackaton’s Birthday”

In ten years, the little robot has gained new functions and has gathered a large community of users. From Thursday to Saturday, a “birthday hackathon” will virtually bring together various groups of fans. The goal is to imagine scenarios in which Thymio robots can provide the foundations of artificial intelligence, according to the statement.
