Distractions, Speeding, and Impaired Driving: Worrisome Behaviors

Canadians view driving misconduct as a serious threat to their safety. In fact, impaired driving, distractions and speeding are major sources of concern according to the results of the recent survey1 by the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA).

While 80% of accidents2 are directly related to driver behavior, it is not surprising that they are also at the center of respondents’ concerns. To this end, they consider that the following elements constitute serious threats to their road safety:

• Use the phone while driving (92%)
• Operation of the on-board computer or infotainment system (67%)
• Use car voice recognition such as Siri or Apple CarPlay (33%)

• Driving over the allowed limit in a residential area (91%)
• Drive well over the speed limit (90%)
• Exceeding the limit allowed on the roads (80%)

Impaired driving
• Alcohol (93%)
• Illegal drugs (93%)
• Cannabis (85%)
• Prescription drugs (64%)

“Not surprisingly, you see the CAA survey results are in perfect line with the latest annual highway report telling us that the top two causes of collisions are distractions and speed,” says Marco Harrison, an expert on road safety and director of the CAA-Quebec Foundation.

As for the fears reported by respondents regarding drunk driving, the holiday season couldn’t be better as a reminder not to get behind the wheel after using drugs or alcohol.

“Even though Christmas is behind us, New Year’s Eve is upon us. We must adopt responsible behaviors, that is, not get behind the wheel after having consumed and plan a safe way to return home. “
– Marco Harrison, road safety expert and director of the CAA-Quebec Foundation

CAA-Quebec recalls that there is no valid excuse for driving while intoxicated and that there are many solutions to stay safe:

– A taxi or any other transportation service.
– Public transport
– A friend or family member
– A person designated to drive
– Sleeping on site
