Do video games affect the well-being of gamers?

Researchers from the University of Oxford have already conducted a study in the fall of 2020 and concluded that online games have a positive effect on the well-being of players. This time they have updated the experience with more members, over 38,000 in 8 different countries and 7 online games including Animal Crossing, New Horizons and Gran Turismo Sport. The researchers were able to restore the duration of the gaming session for 6 weeks. They then sent out a questionnaire to the participants…. three sets of questions to measure how the player feels over time… and from one session to the next… to explore whether feelings affect time spent playing and vice versa. It turns out that well-being or trouble and playing time are in no way connected. Thus, this is an opportunity to remind you that not all scientific studies produce clear results, but they are still interesting, especially on a controversial issue like this one.

The authors insist that “the hopes and fears about video games are often unfounded.” In addition, this study, even if it is not confirmed, shows that everything regarding the impact of video games on health remains to be proven.

Alexandra Delbot talks with Serge Tisseron, psychiatrist, filmmaker and author of Living in New Digital Worlds, published by DUNOD.

The origin of the mysterious pneumonia in Argentina is revealed: it’s legionella

This is a family of bacteria that owes its name to the epidemic that occurred in 1976 at the Congress of Legionnaires. In question at that time: the contours of the air conditioner. Indeed, these bacteria have a natural habitat in fresh water and moist soil and can colonize some stagnant waters such as air conditioners or showers. Infection then occurs through aerosol releases, small droplets containing the pathogen.

Thus, Legionella explains the very localized outbreak in Argentina without person-to-person transmission. At the moment, out of 11 listed cases, 5 deaths, the clinic is isolated as a preventive measure. It remains to find out what kind of strain it is, because there are about sixty of them in this family.

Global warming also affects pathogens

This is one potential effect, but it has never been quantified so far. To do this, researchers at the University of Hawaii studied the past impact of 10 climate events sensitive to greenhouse gas emissions, such as rising sea levels, heavy rains, storms, or even heat waves…and that’s for every human infectious disease. . So they mapped 1,000 pathways, 1,000 ways that these climatic events affect pathogens. For example: heavy rains and floods allow mosquitoes or rats to infect humans. Warmer oceans and heatwaves can lead to food contamination.

It turned out that more than half of these diseases, namely 58%, were exacerbated by climate hazards at some point, and in 16% of them they decreased. This study highlights how climate change could make our contact with pathogens even closer.

Perseverance rover succeeds in producing oxygen on Mars

We talked about this rover on Tuesday and its igneous rock finds in Jezero Crater. This time it’s about the MOXIE tool. He managed to get oxygen from CO2, carbon dioxide, which makes up 95% of the Martian atmosphere. According to this study, published in the journal Science Advances, Moxie works well day and night and delivers 50 grams of oxygen.

This is a demonstration of its capabilities, because oxygen is not stored on board the rover. However, this air is not intended to be inhaled by future explorers, but to be used as fuel to transport astronauts from the surface of the Martian soil to a ship to return to Earth. Indeed, transporting all this oxygen from our planet would be too expensive. Therefore, it remains to build an oxygenator hundreds of times larger.
