eBay launches NFT collection dedicated to athletes

eBay has just launched a collection of non-fungible tokens on their website. This first round of tokens is dedicated to Canadian hockey legend Wayne Gretzky. Other athletes will be awarded in the coming months. This initiative aims to democratize NFT technology by targeting Internet users who are not familiar with cryptocurrencies.

The rise of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) is pushing many companies to enter the market of blockchain-certified digital works. In recent months, Meta has announced the arrival of NFTs on Instagram, luxury brands like Gucci have launched their own collection, and Sega has confirmed the development of AAA games that include non-fungible tokens.

Seeking to capitalize on the success of the NFT, eBay has just released its first collection called Genesis. These digital collectibles are dedicated to the world’s greatest athletes such as National Hockey League legend Wayne Gretsky.

eBay Launches NFT Collection, Rarest Tokens Already Sold Out!

The collection includes animated versions of Gretsky inspired by the covers of Sports Illustrated magazines. “Forty years ago I was grateful to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated, it was a monumental moment in my life,” explains Wayne Gretzky, who says I am “honored to share this experience” with my fans.

eBay offers NFTs with different levels of rarity. The collection is really divided into 4 different levels of rarity. NFTs marked “green” were issued in the amount of 299 copies. Gold NFTs are available in 199 units, Platinum NFTs in 99 assets, and Diamond Tokens in 15 units.

The rarer the NFT, the higher its price. The rarity levels of diamond, platinum and gold are sold on the eBay platform for $1,500, $100, and $25, respectively. The rarest NFTs have already ended. Only green NFTs with a circulation of 299 copies remained. “NFT and blockchain technologies are revolutionizing the collectibles space and are increasingly seen as an investment opportunity for enthusiasts,” explains Dawn BlockVice President of eBay Collectibles.

eBay moves to NFTs as the market drops

To develop this collection of tokens, eBay turned to OneOf, an NFT exchange platform specializing in sports and music. “Through our partnership with OneOf, eBay is making the coveted NFTs more accessible to a new generation of collectors around the world,” eBay said in a press release.

For its part, OneOf believes this partnership will democratize NFT technology. As the platform points out, you no longer need to know about cryptocurrencies to afford a non-fungible token. “You don’t need to be a cryptocurrency expert to buy, sell and collect NFTs. OneOf and eBay bring transformative Web3 technology to 100 million mass consumers unaccustomed to cryptocurrencies,” details Lin DaiCEO of OneOf.

Gradually, the NFT market tends to appeal to the general public, freeing itself from cryptocurrencies. In the same vein, an NFT vending machine was installed in New York City. It allows you to buy NFTs directly with USD using a bank card.

eBay will list other high-level athlete collections throughout the year. The transition of the auction platform to NFT is due to the sharp drop in the market for blockchain digital assets. This drop was caused by the collapse of the cryptocurrency market after the collapse of UST, Luna’s stablecoin. In recent days, the NFT market has gradually stabilized. While most cryptocurrencies are still in the red, NFT sales seem to be weathering the turmoil in the financial market.
