eBay: Will it soon be possible to pay for your purchases in cryptocurrency?

If you can now afford a Tesla with bitcoins, you will soon be able to pay for your eBay purchases in cryptocurrency. Asked about the American channel CNBC, the general manager of the e-commerce giant admitted that new payment options for users of the platform are currently under study. “We are always looking for the most relevant payment methods and will continue to evaluate them in the future. We don’t have immediate plans, but cryptocurrency is something we are watching closely, ”Jamie Lannone said on Monday.

The e-commerce company is also exploring ways to get into non-fungible token (NFT) trading, as its CEO has indicated. “We are exploring opportunities on how we can activate it (NFT) on eBay in an easy way. Everything that is collectable has been on eBay for decades and will remain so for decades to come, ”said the manager. As a reminder, non-fungible tokens are currently at the forefront of the cryptocurrency scene, despite their flaws, especially with regard to their environmental impact.

This is not the first time that eBay has taken a keen interest in cryptocurrencies. The e-commerce giant had indeed integrated the association formed by Facebook around its Libra cryptocurrency project (now Diem), before leaving it in October 2019.

An option at Tesla

Other companies have opened up to payment in cryptocurrency. The boss of the automaker Tesla, Elon Musk (also founder of SpaceX and Neuralink), indicated at the end of March that the company’s electric vehicles can now be bought in bitcoin. If this option is currently only available in the United States, it will be generalized to the rest of the world by the end of the year, said the entrepreneur, known for his strong attraction for cryptocurrencies. .

The boss of the automaker said at the start of the year that he had bought $ 1.5 billion worth of bitcoins, just before announcing that it would soon be a payment method available for the purchase of his vehicles, causing it to soar the price of the world’s most popular cryptocurrency. Elon Musk’s interest in cryptocurrency is so pronounced that he has recently become the champion of this type of currency.

On his Twitter account, the now known as Tesla’s “Technoking” criticized conventional cash last month, saying that when it “has negative real interest, only a fool wouldn’t look the other way.”
