Electronic component shortage will last until at least 2023

The electronics shortage, which affects both the automotive and home appliance industries and is particularly dire for gamers (who have a hard time sourcing both the latest consoles and new PC graphics cards), is not ready for stop. .

Whether they are independent analysts or component suppliers, everyone agrees that there is no silver bullet to the problem, which boils down to a simple mismatch between supply and demand. The Covid-19 shortage has caused manufacturers to lag far behind in 2020, and various lockdowns and other increases in telecommuting have paralleled a sharp increase in demand for electronic devices (even with the arrival of a new one. console generation). However, production capacities were already in flux just in time.

The new factories will not be operational for several years.

This has led to the current shortage, which is not helped by increased (and persistent) demand. Far from improving this year, the situation has even worsened a bit, according to Forrester analyst Glenn O’Donnell in an interview with Engadget. Cross-country skiers obviously didn’t sit idly by.

TSMC, Samsung, and Intel, to name just a few, have already started new factories, but they will not be operational for several years. Intel’s new boss Pat Gelsinger told a conference in Malaysia on December 16 that he expects the crisis to last until 2023. He describes a continued increase in demand: 20% year-over-year.

The same goes for Nvidia. Jensen Huang, CEO of the company, told Yahoo! Finance that foresees a strengthening of production during 2023, although it believes that demand will not weaken, as the trend towards teleworking (and therefore individual computers in computers) is here to stay. It will also be recalled that the company, like its rival AMD, already had problems securing its orders before the crisis linked to Covid-19 because of cryptocurrency miners who monopolized graphics cards to the dismay of consumers.

A whole generation of electronics is permanently affected

Racing Result: Demand for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will not be met anytime soon, and it may financially weaken this generation of consoles while extending the life of the previous one. And it is impossible to refer to PCs for the game because they are even more affected, especially since even mid-range equipment is subject to these restrictions. Therefore, one of the side effects of the situation could be the accelerated adoption of gaming services in the cloud (Xbox Game Pass, GeForce Now, Shadow …), although for the moment it remains moderate.

The same difficulties on the part of companies where the reduced supply of ultrabooks and high-performance workstations runs the risk of pushing CIOs to delay the renovation of computer parks as much as possible. A tip for 2022, therefore: take care of your devices!
