Elon Musk hopes to implant his Neuralink chips in human brains in 2022

Elon Musk said that Neuralink, his technology company that works on a brain interface, hopes to start implanting its chips in humans next year. Co-founded by Elon Musk in 2016, the company is developing a chip that would be implanted in people’s brains to simultaneously record and stimulate brain activity. It is intended for medical applications, such as the treatment of serious spinal cord injuries and neurological disorders.

In a live interview at the Wall Street Journal CEO Council Summit on Monday, Elon Musk was asked what Neuralink plans to do in 2022. He replied, “Neuralink works well in apes, and we are doing a lot of testing and confirming that it is very safe and reliable, and that the Neuralink device is safe to remove. “

“We hope to be able to implant this device in our first humans, who will be people with severe spinal cord injuries, such as quadriplegics or quadriplegics, next year, subject to FDA approval (US Drug Administration, editor’s note)” , said. additional. Elon Musk said that Neuralink’s “standards for implanting the device are significantly higher than what the FDA requires.”

The billionaire reaffirmed the 2022 deadline in a tweet. “Progress will accelerate when we have human devices (it’s hard to have nuanced conversations with apes) next year,” he said.

Elon Musk has already announced shorter timelines for Neuralink to implant its chips in humans for the first time. He said in February that the company could begin rolling out the technology to humans by the end of 2021. In 2019, he said Neuralink hoped to begin testing in humans by the end of 2020. Elon Musk has a habit of “skipping excessively” and not meet the deadlines for your projects.

In April, the company released a video of a monkey playing a video game using a Neuralink device. After raising $ 205 million in July, the company said it would use the funds to develop its chip to allow quadriplegics to control digital devices with thought. Quadriplegia or quadriplegia is total or partial paralysis of the arms and legs.

Neuralink is not the only company developing technology to interact with the brain. In July, a 20-employee biotech company called Synchron obtained clearance from the FDA to begin testing on humans.
