Elon Musk meets Kevin McCarthy and Hakeem Jeffries at the Capitol

Twitter CEO Elon Musk traveled to the US Capitol on Thursday to meet with Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffreys, the billionaire business mogul said on his social media platform.

“I just met [McCarthy] & [Jeffries] to discuss how to ensure that this platform is fair for both parties,” Musk said in a tweet.

McCarthy, Calif., who turned 58 on Thursday, declined to comment on the details of the meeting, only joking with reporters: “He came to wish me a happy birthday. We have been friends for many years.

According to reports, her audience with Jeffreys (NY) appears to have been fortuitous.

By the time Musk arrived at McCarthy’s office, Jeffries was holding a law enforcement briefing with the speaker regarding the Capitol’s preparations for protests over the death of Tyre Nichols following a meeting with Memphis police, CNN reported.

As Jeffries left, he had a brief interaction with the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and Twitter, where, according to the publication, the subject of Twitter came up.

The meeting comes as the House Oversight Committee plans to hold hearings in February over how Twitter responded to the Post’s high-profile October 2020 article about Hunter Biden’s laptop.

Twitter banned articles linking President Biden to his son’s overseas business dealings in the weeks leading up to the 2020 election, saying without evidence that the articles violated the “pirated material” policy.

Committee chairman James Comer (R-Kentucky) told former Twitter executives Vijaya Gadda, Yoel Roth and James Baker that the hearing would consider their decision and asked them to appear.

The committee may vote to force them to appear if they do not volunteer to do so.

Documents released by Musk through what are known as “Twitter Files” reports show early internal doubts about the claim that the documents were hacked because they came from a Delaware computer repairman who produced documents showing that Hunter Biden was on legally gave up his laptop.

Musk’s visit to the Capitol also came amid reports that former President Donald Trump wants to return to Twitter after Musk banned him from the platform in November.
