Five years. This is Elon Musk’s time to treat tinnitus with the Neuralink chip. The billionaire announced this during a correspondence on Twitter on April 24.
“Is there any hope of curing tinnitus? the user asked. “Absolutely,” the new boss of the social network replied. “Maybe in less than five years,” he added, explaining that Neuralink still needs to grow to achieve this.
Neuralink, brain-machine interface
Neuralink has developed a brain-machine interface. It takes the form of a brain implant that is directly connected to the outer layer of the brain. The goal is to allow its wearer to perform gestures with his only thought.
Ringing in the ears is caused by damage to the vestibulocochlear nerve, which connects the inner ear to the brain. Experts acknowledged that the solution could be an implant. It still needs to be developed and tested in humans.
At the moment, the Neuralink implant is placed in the skull of a pig or a monkey. In December 2021, the billionaire announced that he intends to test the brain implant on humans in 2022. Elon Musk’s company will also need to get permission from the FDA, the US health authority, to dream about marketing. Which may take some time.
