Elon Musk’s corrected college allowance has been auctioned for an incredible amount

Even Elon Musk, recently voted “Personality of the Year 2021” by Time magazine, started small. In 1989, the barely adult South African moved to the United States. In 1992, he began his studies at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, graduating five years later, with a bachelor’s degree in economics and physics in hand. Meanwhile, in 1995, Musk founded Zip2, an online software development company in California. The same year, the man who is now the richest man in the world is kept afloat thanks to a student job. A witness to this part of Musk’s life has just been auctioned.

No recollection of Elon Musk

It’s hard to believe, but Musk had left Brian Thomas with no memory at the time. “Even talking about him today, I can’t remember the current mental image of him,” the former Musk alma mater alumnus told CNN news channel. Thomas had attended a business management seminar at the prestigious Wharton School of Business. Musk was then an assistant to Professor Myles Bass. And it turns out that Musk read and corrected a Thomas assignment. The one who became the CEO of PayPal, Tesla and SpaceX had mostly left a notation on the handwritten document. Thomas had used a vulgar twist (“when shit hits the fan”, literally “when shit hits the fan”, which could be translated as “when things start to go wrong”), a private joke intended for his teacher, since explains today to CNN. Musk obviously didn’t quite get it and took two points away from the student for what he considered an inappropriate term.

A musk souvenir sold at auction

Thomas still kept the homework in memory of his college days and his old professor. It was while searching his garage that his son ended up stumbling upon the editorial staff and Musk’s name and initials caught his eye, as Thomas recounts. Then he had RR Auction, an autograph auction company in Boston, estimate his college work. The maximum offer is inclusive of taxes of 7,753 US dollars (approximately 6,853 euros). The name of the new owner of Musk’s annotated copy has not been released.
