Elon Musk’s strange school

Billionaire Elon Musk, head of the companies SpaceX and Tesla, is well known for his way of thinking quite different from that of the majority of the population. In the field of education, Musk is also a rebel as he supports alternative methods and has repeatedly criticized the educational system in the United States. But the difference between the general population and Musk is that he not only criticized, he himself founded a school based on the system that suits him best.

It was in 2014 that Musk announced the creation of his school called “Ad Astra” that has its own system, and where the children of the billionaire and some others handpicked study. Little is known about this particular school that is located within the SpaceX facility in California. On their website you could only see the logo and email address of the establishment at first. Later, as of June 2018, nothing could be viewed on the site.

Today, Elon Musk has 6 living children and has stated that he does not want his descendants to study in a traditional elite school. According to him, he himself hated going to school when he was little. He was also a victim of bullying at the time. So he decided to found Ad Astra in 2014, with the help of a former teacher at the Mirman School for Gifted Children, where his children had previously worked.

The system used by Ad Astra

Musk’s school reportedly has three distinct goals. First, it must be an alternative to the model that applies age segregation. The billionaire explains that separating children by age does not make sense for education. The reason is that students have different abilities and interests, regardless of their age.

The second goal is to focus on problem solving. Therefore, students should not be given “tools in a vacuum”, but rather trained to solve problems. Finally, Musk indicates that he does not need to “encourage his children to play” since education through play is something natural for children, and it is the method used by the school.

Regarding the educational model used by Ad Astra, the head of SpaceX explained that it is based on not quantifying students, but on detecting their skills. The children are not separated according to their age, the children, who are between 7 and 14 years old, are trained to be able to work as a team.

The subjects taught are also different since students are taught Artificial Intelligence, applied science, coding, but also design including the creation of robots. We know that sports, foreign languages, and music are not taught at Musk’s school. The latter indicates that when it comes to foreign languages, there is now instant translation software.

And the University?

Providing an alternative education is good, but will students who drop out of Ad Astra be able to enter universities? For Elon Musk, this is not a problem, as he does not consider college education to be important. In December 2020, he said that college is generally a place to have fun and show that you can do your homework, but it is not a place to learn.

Musk added on this topic that universities train students to take on the “boring tasks” they will face when they enter the world of work. According to him, it is absurd for companies to hire their employees based on their academic credentials. He also indicated that you could learn everything for free on the Internet and mentioned different names of billionaires who dropped out of college such as Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates or Steve Jobs.

In any case, if you want your children to enter Elon Musk’s school, it seems that they will open up the enrollment process a bit more, but the number of places will continue to be limited to maintain the “rebellious spirit”. From the campus. . For the rest, we don’t really know who the kids studying there are at the moment besides Musk’s kids.
