Employees increasingly attached to hybrid work

If you are the director of a company and you do your best to get your employees back to the office full time, perhaps you should take into account the results of the Microsoft survey, which found that most of the time. Half of the employees would consider quitting if there was no hybrid job option. Whether these employees would actually quit is another story. But anyway, when asked by YouGov as part of a survey commissioned by Microsoft, an advocate of hybrid work, about 51% of them said they would quit if the current combination of telecommuting and face-to-face disappeared.

As Microsoft states in a blog post, hybrid work has become a “must have” in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. Most human resource (HR) managers seem to agree with the benefits of the hybrid for employees. About 59% of HR decision makers agree that “hybrid work has had a positive effect on the mental well-being of their staff.” The survey was conducted between 7 and 15 October 2021 among 2,046 employees and 504 HR decision makers in the UK.

The investigation’s findings come as a “wave of resignations” is underway in parts of Europe and the United States. However, the question of how long it will last is different. Some 4.4 million Americans left their jobs in September in search of better conditions in a tight labor market. This phenomenon has been called the “great abandonment”. But as CNBC recently reported, this trend could be short-lived, or at least a consequence of the current income support pandemic that is holding back labor market participation.

Hybrid work more than full telework

Also in the UK, resignation and job change rates have peaked in recent months. “The total number of job-to-job transfers also rose to a record 979,000, primarily driven by resignations rather than layoffs, during the July-September 2021 period,” the Office for National Statistics said in November, the equivalent of INSEE nationwide. Channel. This is the highest level in two decades.

Microsoft points the finger at another quirk produced by telecommuting in the pandemic. No less than 36% of British workers who started after the onset of the pandemic have joined the employer without ever setting foot in the workplace. This situation had an impact on the social aspect of work: 42% said they had difficulty building relationships with their new colleagues, 33% reported a lack of guidance from managers, 24% said they had difficulty learning new software and applications, 23% failed to gain the trust of their colleagues and 21% did not feel the culture of the company.

More than a third (36%) of HR managers have difficulty training new hires, while 35% are not sure they have access to the correct information. Despite these initial training issues, employees and HR managers find that the benefits of the hybrid outweigh the costs. The good news for Microsoft is that 37% of HR managers believe that the right technology solves the problem of integrating workers into hybrid arrangements. Microsoft has prepared for a long-term shift to hybrid work with new meeting and telecommuting features for its Teams communication platform, among others.
