Energy, telecommunications, crypto, automotive, streaming: what will change in 2023

Who says new year says new rules. From January 1, 2023, major changes have already come into effect in a number of sectors such as energy, telecommunications, finance and the automotive industry. We sum up.

Rising energy prices

From January 1, 2023, energy prices will rise for the French. After several months of state support, the increase will be more significant at the beginning of the year.

First at the gas station, with the end of the discount on fuel. Until December 31, 2022, the state paid 10 cents per liter of fuel. This system ends on January 1, 2023. Instead, the state provided 100 euros in aid for the most modest French, or about 10 million people, according to the criteria presented by the government.

If you heat with gas, from January 1, 2023, the bill is also likely to increase. The Energy Commission effectively imposed a 15 percent increase in regulated natural gas prices.

Finally, if you have not yet agreed to install a Linky meter in your home, from 2023 you will be charged a fee of around sixty euros per year for this refusal. This device is designed to compensate for the installation of a less efficient meter requiring more maintenance. Until the end of 2024, it is possible to bypass this billing by taking your own statement. But from 2025 it will be necessary to go to the cashier.

Transportation: electric vehicles and car sharing

If you were planning to buy an electric car in 2023, now is the time to inquire about the assistance offered. From January 1, the devices change.

The environmental bonus for buying an electric car is decreasing from 6,000 euros in 2022 (7,000 for the most modest households) to 5,000 euros in 2023. This reassessment was already scheduled for July 2022, but the state has decided to extend this assistance. for another six months to ease the transition.

The new device compensates for this reduction in the environmental premium, but is intended only for consumers with lower incomes. In fact, a loan with a zero interest rate is intended for the purchase of an electric car. To take advantage of it, you must be an individual, have a limited income, and live in certain major cities in France. So the €100 a month car promised by Emmanuel Macron seems far away for the moment.

Still in the transport part, the state has created a system encouraging the French to share cars. Drivers who regularly use carpooling will receive a €100 bonus in either cash or fuel stamps. How carpuers are rewarded will be decided by each platform.

The payment of this assistance is progressive. The first surcharge of 25 euros is given during the first trip by car. The remaining 75 euros are given after 10 trips.

With the exception of Free, all carriers have announced price increases for their fixed and mobile plans. This increase affects most of the time all offered formulas and reaches an average of 3 euros per subscription. Here’s the bad news for you.

Among the positive changes, we highlight the cessation of collecting telephone numbers starting with 06 and 07. Thus, these codes are reserved for individuals: companies specializing in the collection of votes or ephemeral communications (delivery personnel, drivers, etc.) will have to use number starting with 09.

Orange also announced that landlines can now follow you as you move. So, like a mobile phone number, a landline number can be portable, i.e. if you live in an area with an area code of 04 today, you can keep it even if you’re moving out of the area. Note that overseas departments and territories are not affected.

Finally, the La Poste group announced they were phasing out the red stamp in favor of a red email. Instead of writing, printing, buying stamps and mailing, it will be possible to access the page dedicated to sending simple mail on the La Poste website.

The method is simple: you go to the site, type the letter and specify the recipient. We pay (of course), then La Poste will take care of printing and franking the letter to send it to your recipient.

Finance: PEL rise, crypto reform

By this start of the 2023 school year, there is also a level in finance. The state first announced a revaluation of the minimum wage by about 1.81%, or about twenty euros per month on a 35-hour contract per week. Growth considered low by the social partners, while inflation for the year reached 6.2% in November 2022.

At the same time, the Home Savings Plan (PEL) rate is increasing. Although it was limited to 1% in 2022, the PEL rate reached 2% in 2023. Please note that this rate does not apply to already open PELs, but only to those created since January 1, 2023.

Finally, the cryptocurrency world is also eligible for a slight change at the start of the 2023 school year. Capital gains will be taxed at a rate of 12.8% (excluding social security contributions), whether you are an individual or a professional.

When declaring taxes, you can always choose between this tax or a progressive tax scale. What is more interesting from the point of view of taxation, everyone decides. Also, feel free to follow our complete guide to properly tax your cryptocurrencies.

Streaming: End of Netflix Account Sharing

Apart from the new directories announced by various platforms, there is one that has decided to change its rules. As of January 1, 2023, Netflix has made the decision to stop sharing accounts.

So, little by little, over the course of a year, the number 1 streaming platform intends to put an end to this practice, due to which it loses millions every month.

Thus, people linked to a family account who are not members of the same family will have to go to the cashier. Netflix has yet to reveal a price for this participation, but according to people familiar with the matter, the company was targeting a price close to its most affordable offering to encourage users to switch to their own formula. To make the transition easier, Netflix has developed a tool to transfer your profile to a new account. Smart.

Finally, the French OCS (Orange Cinema Series) is losing one of its biggest assets to its competitors. As of January 1, 2023, the HBO catalog (Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, The Handmaid’s Tale, Westworld, etc.) is no longer integrated into the platform. Thus, HBO terminates the exclusive partnership of 10 years.

So far, we do not know where the series of the American group will be broadcast. In the US and some European countries, HBO offers its own streaming platform. In France, the service is long overdue, but no arrival date has been given.

Here are the main changes in 2023 in the field of technology, telecommunications, energy, finance, etc. There will be other successes this year, in particular in the field of healthcare. For example, effective January 1, 2023, condoms are free for those under 26, and emergency contraception is free for all women without a prescription. Significant upheaval for our society.
