Explore a nightmarish sci-fi landscape in Simon Stålenhag’s new art book ‘The Labyrinth’ (exclusive)

Swedish visionary illustrator and author Simon Stålenhag (“The Electric State”) has an uncanny ability to present advanced machinery in ordinary settings to create a dreamy juxtaposition of time and technology. Anyone who has ever experienced his astonishing artwork is left with a wonderful insight into a fictional world that resonates with haunting beauty.

And if its retro-futuristic style sounds familiar, Amazon Prime’s evocative sci-fi anthology “Tales From The Loop” was inspired by its catalog of surreal paintings. Now Stålenhag has created a new 184-page apocalyptic art book that takes full advantage of his fiercely original compositions and Space.com has an exclusive peek inside this luxurious hardcover.

“The Labyrinth” (Image / Skybound, 2021) arrived on November 17 in a prestigious format edition that offers the visual saga of devastation and revenge against an otherworldly kingdom filled with ancient remnants of a catastrophic phenomenon.

A heavy eight-wheeler moves through a hellish landscape of ash and ruined buildings toward a lonely bunker deep in the remote desert. Inside the vehicle are three passengers: two scientists, who intend to use the outpost as a headquarters to study doomsday phenomena, and a boy named Charlie.

As the story progresses, the isolation and claustrophobia of the base of operations threatens every member of the expedition with madness. Forced to face their own dark history and the struggles of the haves and the have-nots, the team finds themselves hurtling into an inevitable hell.

“The Labyrinth” is available in comic book stores and digital platforms such as Amazon Kindle, Apple Books and Google Play and anywhere books are sold.
