Snow blanketed much of Greece on Monday, as far as the southern island of Crete, due to a cold snap with temperatures dipping as low as minus 14 degrees at times, causing power and road cuts.
Snow fell for the first time this winter in central Athens, prompting the closure of the Greek parliament and schools.
Air and sea transport were not affected, but the circulation of metro trains to the capital’s airport was interrupted.
“This is an extreme situation for our country,” said Christos Zerefos, a professor of atmospheric physics, on the public television channel ERT.
Meanwhile, Costas Lagouvardos, director of research at the National Observatory of Athens, told ANT1 television that the capital had not seen such weather since 1968.
Snow even fell on several Greek islands in the Aegean Sea (between Greece and Turkey), isolating some mountain villages on Andros, Naxos and Tinos and covering the beaches of Mykonos.
There was also heavy snowfall on the island of Euboea, north of Athens, already devastated by fires this summer.
Municipalities have stepped up efforts to keep main roads open, while many villages have suffered power outages.
Snowfall is expected to continue on Tuesday, with temperatures below freezing, civil protection said.
