Fall Guys is going to be cross-platform and free-to-play soon

Here at Tom’s Guide we love Fall Guys. We named it one of the best games of 2020 and also one of the best Steam games you can buy. However, on June 21, you will no longer be able to buy the game – it will officially become free. To sweeten the deal, June 21 also marks the release date for Fall Guys on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.

The official Fall Guys Twitter account posted a short video explaining the upcoming event. The short version is that Fall Guys, which is currently available on PS4 and Steam, will release on June 21st for a range of new platforms. The game will be available on PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. What’s more: the game won’t cost a dime.

However, gamers who have already shelled out $20 for Fall Guys need not worry as developer Mediatonic has promised a “Legacy Pack” for existing players. It will include new costumes and accessories for your Fall Guys characters, presumably ones new F2P players won’t be able to get. As for whether it’s worth it to spend $20 to lock your Legacy Pack right now, it’s hard to say as we don’t know exactly what it will include.

Another positive is that if you’ve already played Fall Guys, you don’t have to worry about losing your progress on the new platform. The game will feature cross-play and cross-progress across all of its different versions. So you can play Fall Guys with your friends, no matter what platform they own. Also, if you start the game on a different system (for example, start on PC and then pick up the Switch in another room), you can pick up where you left off. This is a handy feature, and even today, not every multiplayer game offers it.

As before, the developers will continue to add new content to the game over time. The Twitter announcement promises “new levels” and “new costumes”. However, it’s worth noting that Fall Guys has always made money by selling extra cosmetic items, and since it’s a free-to-play game, this trend is likely to only get worse. Steam is currently listing 11 different DLC packs for the game for $5 each. You can also purchase Kudos, Fall Guys’ in-game currency, with real money and then spend it on various microtransactions.

bottom line? While Fall Guys will be free-to-play soon, good looks can be worth the extra money.
