Portugal’s cannabis legislation is one of the most progressive in the world, and its licensing system is ahead of most other European countries. Portugal decriminalized the personal use of cannabis in 2001 and legalized its medical use in 2018. Since then, 20 official licenses have been issued for the production, processing, import, export of medical cannabis, or a combination of categories, and Fluence has been selected to provide coverage for more than half of them.
Key Leaves, the leader in the medical cannabis market in Portugal, is one of the 20 companies that have received a medical cannabis license from the Portuguese government. The company is focused on providing the highest quality medical cannabis products that comply with Good Agricultural and Harvest Practices and Good Distribution Practices, as well as all applicable Portuguese regulations.
The success of Key Leaves, a fully enclosed research and development facility, relies on single source lighting and has completed over 20 complete grow cycles using Fluence LED technology. Fluence LEDs have helped Key Leaves optimize production and grow light cycles, increase yields, improve uniformity and reduce energy consumption.
“To achieve our business goals with the most efficient and effective manufacturing processes, we have invested in the best technology and partnerships,” says Alessandro Radici, CEO of Key Leaves. “Fluence’s market-leading LED technology and the continued support of its R&D and horticultural teams enable us to grow crops at peak efficiency, deliver a highly standardized product, and ensure consistent supply for our customers. »
Fluence supplies LED lighting solutions to ten other licensed Portuguese medical cannabis growers, including Bathera, Curaleaf International and Clever Leaves and AceCann (under pre-licensing), as well as a number of other companies currently seeking a license. German Bathera recently started producing its own medical marijuana and decided to build an indoor grow and production site near Lisbon. There are 6,000 square meters of cultivation area and 3,000 square meters of ancillary areas under construction, such as a GMP area, six drying rooms, and a manual cutting and packaging area.
“Thanks to the wonderful Portuguese climate, outdoor cultivation is of course possible. We have done rigorous research and analysis for each building solution, and after exploring the various options, we have decided that growing indoors is the only way to guarantee consistent, quality products,” says Boris Aghababov, Founder and CEO of Bathera.
Curaleaf International is working to promote the therapeutic value of cannabis used for medical purposes in order to develop products that meet the needs of patients across Europe. The company’s commitment to accessibility, research and data-driven product improvement led it to Fluence when it needed to find a lighting partner for its operations in Portugal.
“The goal of Fluence is to help our customers become smarter and create effective economies of scale,” says Jörg Meyer-Brenken, Cannabis EMEA Senior Account Manager at Fluence. “We are driven by science, and the collaborative approach we take to provide our partners with personalized lighting solutions, knowledge and experience has proven invaluable, especially for players in emerging markets for medicinal cannabis. »
Portugal-born André Lagareiro, Fluence Portugal Dedicated Account Manager, works closely with Fluence’s Portuguese clients to help them identify the right lighting solutions to optimize site development and operations.
“Helping companies innovate and promote medical cannabis operations in the Portuguese legal environment requires a deep understanding of cannabis culture and European regulatory standards,” says Lagareiro. “The unrivaled products, experience and quality of services provided by Fluence’s in-house R&D team are the decisive factor that has led many Portuguese cannabis companies to choose Fluence as their lighting technology partner. »
